SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 581,834, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed October 2, 1896. Serial No. 607,691. (No model.)
T0 all 1071/0711/ t may concern:
Beit known that I, ELLA MAY STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vardrobes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. p
This invention relates to improvements in portable wardrobes, the object thereof being to supply an article of this character which can be folded into compact form, whereby it can be conveniently carried in a trunk without taking up much space, while at the same time when it is set up and adjusted for use a compartment is provided of sufficient area to contain a suitable number of garments.
The device is adapted for use in summer hotels, where closet-room is not generally provided. It is simple in construction, inexpensive, and capable of receiving' any desired amount of ornamentation.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved wardrobe, showing the same set up ready for use. Fig. 2 is arvertical sectional elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on a line a; a; of Fig. 2, looking toward the rear and showing the wardrobe contracted. Fig. t is a rear elevation showing the wardrobe extended. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the wardrobe disassembled and folded for shipment. Fig. 6 is a detail in cross-sec? tion, showing a means for attaching the telescopic rods forming part of my device to the side walls thereof; and Fig. 7 is a detail rear view illustratin ga means for attaching a front piece to the wardrobe.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, two vertical walls A, which said walls comprise sections a and a', these said sections being hinged together at their points of juncture by suitable hinges a2, and they are maintained in rigid upright position by means of bolts B, which slide in Ways b upon the sections c.' and engage with sockets l) upon the sections CL.
Engaging with the upper edges of the sections a, preferably by means of dovetailed joints a3, are inwardly-extended top plates O, which said plates are telescopically connected to a centrally-located plate O', these said parts being held together by means of metallic straps c, whereby the device may be adjusted in width as desired.
Extended between the side walls A and connected to the upper sections a thereof are telescopic rods D, located, respectively, at the front and rear of the device, these said rods comprising sections d and CZ. These said rods carry a plurality of curtainrings E, from which curtains F are suspended when the device is set up, as illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.
The under surfaces of the plates O and O contain hooks G for receiving garments, and should it be desirable to contract the wardrobe in width, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the hooks contained upon the central plate C must be removed.
As a means for bracing the device after it is set up, two long hooks II are-pivotally attached to the inner ends of the plates O at the rear of the wardrobe. These said hooks engage with eyes 7i, extended from the rear edges of the sections a of the side walls A. The respective ends of the poles or rods D are provided with interiorly-threaded portions D', which en gage with threaded projections I, secured to the inner surfaces of the upper sections a of the side walls of the device,
,whereby the rods can be removed when it is desired to pack and fold the wardrobe.
To add a :finish to the wardrobe, a front or top piece J is provided. This said piece is secured to the central section O of the top of the wardrobe by means of hooks j and eyes j', as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding portable wardrobe, the combination of the sectional side walls and means for locking them to each other; with the telescopic top wall and means for connecting it IOO to the side Walls, the telescopio rods Connected my invention I have signed my name, in presto the side Walls, and means for connecting ence of two Witnesses, this 30th day of Septhem thereto, the braces connecting the top tomber, 1896.
Wall and the side Walls, and the top piece, ELLA MAY STAFFORD. 5 and means for Connecting it to the top wall, Vitnesses:
substantially as shown and described. CHAs. SEDGWICK,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as O. C. VINGE.
