UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE N. OLDI-IAM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
STERILIZER FOR DENTISTS INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,407, dated April 27, 1897. Appnmannarme,1396. saturo. 594,620. (Nomad.)
To all whom zz'; may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE N. OLDHAM, of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Sterilizers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in a dental sterilizer; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claim.
The object of my invention is to construct a device which is used by the dentists for the rapid sterilization of their instruments and thus preventing the transmitting of disease germs from one person to another. As soon as the dentist or operator has finished operating on one person he immediately sterilizes the instruments he used before operating on the next patient.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my complete invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, taken on the line AA of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end view of my device, showing the opening in which the lamp is placed. Fig. 4 is a top plan view with the lid or cover removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the movable pan in which the antiseptic solution is held. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the wire strainer in which the small instruments are to be placed to be sterilized.
In the drawings, 1 indicates an oval-shaped drum provided at its top with a cover or lid 2, and in its lower portion and at one end is an opening 3. Said drum 1 is provided with a ridge 4,which extends around the entire drum. Within said drum 1 and secured to both sides is a partition 5, which extends from the top of said drum 1 down to the ridge 4, and said partition bent horizontally, making a horizontal partition 6, thereby forming a receptacle 7 of itself and in which is adapted to be placed the antiseptic sand 8.
At the lower right-hand edge of the receptacle 7 is an extension 9, formed by and being a part of the partitions 5 and 6, and upon said extension 9 rests a movable pan 10. In said pan 10 is placed the concentrated antiseptic solution 11. (See Fig. 2.)
Below the receptacle 7 and at a suitable distance from the bottom is a deflector 12, which is supported by a portion of itself bent downward and secured to the walls of the drum, said detlectorforming a complete right angle and is for the purpose to prevent the heat passing into the chamber 13 beneath the pan 10.
Beneath the chamber 7 and deiector 12 is placed a lamp 14, gas-jet, or any other suitable device, which provides said sand with heat, as it is designed to heat said sand from 200O to 250o Fahrenheit.
Along the wall of the drum 1 and beneath the receptacle 7 are provided holes 15, which are to provide a draft for the light.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the dentist or operator has finished an operation on his patient, he places the instruments that he has used into the antiseptic solution 11, moving them therein, causing them to be washed. Then he takes them from said solution and dries them by placing them in the hot antiseptic sand. Should the instruments used be very small, said instruments are then laid into thewire strainer 16, and in like manner they are placed into the antiseptic bath and then dried in the antiseptic sand, as before mentioned.
By the use of this device many diseases are prevented from being transmitted from one person to another, as the solution and sand are of antiseptic qualities.
Having fully'described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved dental sterilizer comprising the oval-shaped drum 1, having a suitable lid or cover, said drum provided with a receptacle 7 at one end and a removable pan 10 at the other, a delector 12 to prevent the heat from directly striking receptacle 7, and bent downward to interpose between the heater and pan 10, a heating device located under the deiiector and the walls being provided with suitable draft-holes, substantially GEORGE N. OLDHAM.
