' J. WEST. TYPE POUNDERSPUMP. "No. 581,382 Patented Apr. 27,1897.
UNITED STATES PATE T FFICE.
JOHN VEST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TYPE-FOUNDERS PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,382, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed April 20, l 8 9 6.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN VVEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Founders Pumps; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of pumps used by type-founders for injecting molten metal into the type-casting molds, and has for its object to provide a pump or apparatus of this character with certain features that will permit of the use of much harder type-metal than has heretofore been possible under the ordinary arrangement.
The nature of the invention consists in providing a packing for the stuffing-box of the pump which is of such a character as will resist the soldering action of the molten metal and prevent the plunger from sticking inits working passage; The kind of packing employed permits of the use of the metal pumpplunger ordinarly used in this class of machines.
Figure 1 is a part elevation and part section of a type-casting pump which embodies my improved feature; Fig. 2, a vertical section on line 2, Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow, showing the metalreservoir and pump-plunger connection; and Fig. 3, a detached plan detail.
The general features of the apparatus are the same as those set forth in my Patent No. 554,406, issued February 11, 1896. The description therefore in this application will be more especially confined to the improved feature.
A represents a casing; B, the molten-metal reservoir inclosed thereby.
The inclosing casing is open for the introduction of a gas or other burner B, which serves the purpose of maintaining the metal composition in the required molten or fluid state. The relative position of the burner or heating attachment is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
O is the pump-plunger or piston, and may be of metal or any other material suitable for the purpose.
The metal-reservoir is provided with a well- $erial No. 588,251. (No model.)
chamber D. A stuffing-box I), through which the plunger works, is mounted on the Wellchamber.
The packing E used in the stuffing-box is composed of mica formed into a series of rings and inserted in the stuffing-box in the usual manner common to piston and rod packing. The packing-rings of mica may be of any thickness that will afford the best results, and any number may be used according to the depth of the stuffing-box. The packingrings may be blocked out of the natural product, when of sufficient thickness, or cut out of the thin sheets and compressed and made to adhere together.
A packing-gland a is inserted in the upper end of the stuffing-box.
A clamping-arm F, Fig. 3, is secured near its outer end to the casing by a bolt I), inserted through an elongated slot 19 in the arm F. The inner end of the clamping-arm is bifurcated to extend on each side of the pumpplunger, and has the bifurcated ends 01 d turned downwardly at right angles to bear on the packing-gland and prevent the same from turning or working out of place. The slot 1) permits of the arm being drawn back endWise out of the way when it is necessary to have access to the stuffing-box. The fluid metal flows from the reservoir into the well-chamber through an orifice d.
It is learned by practical working that the employment of mica as a packing or lining for the plunger-passage permits of the use of the hardest alloy for type-metal that the casting-molds will stand and without the least liability of the plunger becoming clogged or sticking, as the fluid metal does not have the least soldering effect. with reference to the packing and the ordinary metal plunger.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a type-casting pump, the combination with a stuffing-box and the pump-plunger working therethrough, of a packing consisting of a number of rings composed of mica, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN WEST.
