G.ROGERS..
BEDSTEAD.
No. 581,37o. Patented Apr. 27., 1897.
NVENTOH WTNESSES NlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE GEORGE ROGERS, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. !581,370, dated April 27, 1897. t
Application filed July 28,1896. Serial No. 600,'792. (No model.) Patented in England January 11, 1896, No. '738.
To all whom it may concrn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ROGERS, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Birmingham, in the County of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads and the Manufacture Thereof, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, formingapart there of, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to bedsteads, and particularly to means for connecting the side and end rails with the posts or for connecting the side rails with the ends or head and foot portions, and is the same for which Letters Patent were granted in Great Britain January ll, 1896, No. 738; and the object of the invention is to provide improved devices for this purpose which are simple in Construction and operation and much less expensive than those heretofore employed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the posts of a bedstead provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 a bottom plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 one of the posts of a bedstead, and in the practice of my invention I dispense with the usual corner-pieces on the head and foot posts of the bedstead and the dovetail connecting devices on the side and end rails and provide short sleeves or collars 6, one of which is mounted on each post and secured thereto, or said sleeves or collars may be cast on said posts, and each collar is provided with an angular shoulder or projection 7, the form of which is clearly shown, the side walls thereof being vertical at 8 and 9 and the inner side being extended inwardly, so as to form a vertical shoulder 10 at the outer end thereof, and the bottom of said shoulder or projection is cut away, as shown at 12 in Fig. 3, and provided with a vertical screw-threaded-bore 13, which is adapted to receive a cotter-pin, bolt, or screw 15, and I also form on or secure to the ends of the side and end rails angle- pieces 16 and 17, respectively, the bottom plates 18 of which are cut out at their outer edges, so as to overlap beneath the shoulder or projection 7 within the cut-away portion at 12, as shown in Fig. 3, and said angle-pieces are securely bolted to said shoulder or projection 7 by means of the cotter-pin, bolt, or screw 15, which may be provided with a head in the usual manner or with a nut 19.
This method of connecting the separate parts of the bedstead is much more simple than that heretofore employed and is also comparatively inexpensive, and my invention is not limited to the form of the bed, nor to that of the side and end rails, nor to the method in which the same are constructed.
Having` fully described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described means for securng the side and end rails of a bedstead, to the posts thereof, which consists of a collar or sleeve connected with each of said posts, and angular attaching devices formed on or secured to the end of said side and end rails, said collar or sleeve being provided with an angular shoulder or projection, the side walls of which are vertical, and .the inner side being eXtended inwardly, so as to form a Vertical shoulder, and the bottom of which is cut away, and adapted to receive the overlapping ends of the fastening devices, secured to the ends of the rails, and provided with a vertical screw-threaded bore, which is adapted to receive a pin or bolt which is passed through said overlapping ends of the attaching devices, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1896.
GEORGE ROGERS.
