Be it known that I, ARTHUR FoLenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Time and Result Indicators for Race-Tracks, Games, and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates more especially to an IQ improvement in the device jointly patented by myself and ill. H. l/Vinder November 18,

1894, No. 529,118; and it consists in the novel features of construction of the shunt or switch device for automatically causing the display- [5 shields to change from a longitudinal to a transverse position in the front opening for view before the spectators when said displayshields are projected forward by their respective keyed rods, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.

My device herein is composed of a horizontal bar A, having constructed at one end a wide fork B, having lugs b b, and at the other end a narrow fork O, the latter in turn comprising 0 a pair of arms 0 and c, which are provided with eyes or orifices and engage over a vertical pin 1) for swinging pivotal connection therewith.

E is a vertical plate having orificed lugs e e constructed thereon, between which latter the forked arms 0 c are hinged on said pin 1), a spiral spring F being wound on said pin and bearing at its opposite ends against the fork C and the plate E, respectively, so as to antomatically return the device to its normal position after a display operation.

0 is a projection or extension constructed on the said arm 0 to provide a stop and prevent undue rear movement of the device in assuming its normal position.

The spring-controlled bar A and its forked arms B and C form my automatic shunt or switch device, which is substituted for the guide-wedges fandf of said former patent in causing the display-shields to positively turn from a longitudinal to a transverse position in their advance movement for full square presentation to viewbefore the specta tors, the automatic springhinges d (lettered a in the said former patent) causing the shields to return to their normal position on withdrawal from a front opening.

G represents each one of the vertical display-shields g, the suitably-numbered operating key-rods thereof; H H, the two vertical side walls of the casing; 7t, a vertical partition in the front of the casing, and I I the display-openings, which may be two or more to suit the use of the indicator.

The shunt device is attached either singly or doubly, or both, as seen in Fig. 2, to the rear of the display-openings, a single shunt being mounted with its plate E attached to the far side wall H for switching the lesser set of display -shields back thereof and a double set of shunts being mounted with their plates E attached to the partition h and side wall H, respectively, for switching the greater set of display-shields located back thereof. These shunts are mounted about mid-height or intermediate the top and bottom of the display-shields, and their forked ends B being very wide prevent any wabblin g or rocking out of line of the several displayshields in the reciprocal movements thereof within the box to and from display position, and thus also prevent any binding or catching contact of the upper and lower ends of said shields on the inner surfaces of the top and bottom of the box. 5

The lesser forks G at the inner ends of the several shunts also aid in preventing any wabblin g or rocking of the shields, especially at the hinging or pivotal points thereof. The several movements or motions of the displayshields are therefore Very easy and firm, and they cannot be annoyingly and accidentally caught in reciprocating them to and from pre senting View.

In the operation of my device the key or handle of the key-rod connected with the shield to be displayed is grasped by the operator and pushed forward till the outer vertical edge of the display-shield positively engages the lugs h b on the fork B, at which time (as the pushing of the rod still continues) the said shield swings forward in a quartercircle from a longitudinal to a transverse po sition into and across the opening for view. When it is desired to withdraw the shield from View, the said rod is drawn backward, carrying with it the shield, which automatically assumes its longitudinal position against the rod (by means of its spring-hinge d) as soon as it leaves said lugs b on the fork B, the arm carrying the latter at once automatically assuming its normal transverse position on its spring-hinge fork C F within the fore end of the casing, slightly to the rear of the front openings I and I.

I claim In an indicator or display apparatus, the combination with a sliding display-shield, of a shunt or switch device composed of a horizontal bar A having, at one end a wide fork B, and, at its other end, a narrow fork C; lugs or lateral projections 11, Z), constructed on fork 13 in the longitudinal path of said shield; extension or step c on the fork C; and a vertical pin having a spiral spring thereon and mounted in lugs on a plate to which said fork C is hinged by said pin; the whole being constructed and mounted within a suitable box or casing having display-openings, and adapted to operate, substantially as herein set forth.
