SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,022, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed July 13, 1896 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. FLANDERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Mixing Gases and Liquids; an d I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for mixing gases and liquids and is designed especially for the mixing of carbonicacid gas and water to make the so-called soda-Water of commerce.
It consists of a carriage pivotally mounted on a suitable sliding block in combination with mechanism for giving the carriage a simultaneous tilting and reciprocating motion.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the rocker-shaft being broken away and the dotted lines showing the different positions of the carriage and soda-tank in the process of oscillation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the carriage, showing the tanks in position. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line X X, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a sectional detail View taken on line Y Y, Fig. 1.

In said drawings, A represents the supporting bed or frame. Mounted in said frame and adapted to travel on tracks E are reciprocatin g blocks D. Pivotally attached to said blocks by means of rod F is a carriage B, on which is mounted in any convenient manner the tanks 0. Rigidly attached to the end of carriage B is 'a projecting arm H, having a slot I therein. The end J of the eccentricrod N is pivotally attached to said arm H by a bolt S and is adapted to be adjusted latorally in slot I in said arm. A link L has one end pivoted to the frame, as at M, and the other end pivotally attached to the end of the eccentric-rod N. It is adapted to be adjusted vertically in a slot K therein by means of bolt T and a set-nut. \The other end of the eccentric-rod N is eccentrioally $erial No. 598,930. (No model.)
mounted on the driving-shaft Q, as seen in Fig. 1. It will be seen that by this mechanism a combined tilting and reciprocating movement is imparted to the carriage, the extreme points of reciprocation occurring sim ultaneo usl y, the horizontal movement being caused by the lateral movement of the eccentric-rod due to the pivoted link L, and the vertical movement being caused by the vertical reciprocation of said rod.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: The soda-water tank filled or partially filled with water is placed upon the carriage and is then connected by suitable means, such as by a flexible pipe V, with the gas-generator. (Not shown.) The gas is then forced into the tank under pressure and the machine started. \Vith each revolution of the eccentric the carriage is brought forwardly and upwardly and downwardly and backwardly, so that the gas is commingled with the water, the double movement of the tank serving to agitate the contents to a greater extent and thereby more effectually to charge the liquid with the gas.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- 1. In an apparatus for mixing gases and liquids, in combination, horizontal parallel tracks, carriage-supports adapted to reciprocate thereon, a carriage centrally and pivotally mounted on said supports a gas and liquid containing receptacle mounted on said carriage and means for imparting a combined tilting and reciprocating motion to said carriage, the extreme points of tilting and reciprocating occurring simultaneously, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In an apparatus for mixing gases and liquids, in combination, a supporting-frame, a carriage pivotally mounted on blocks adapted to travel on suitable tracks in said frame, a projecting arm rigidly attached to said carriage, a link pivotally attached to the frame, an eccentric-rod pivotally attached to said arm and link and means for operating said eccentric-rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. In an apparatus for mixing gases and liquids, in combination, a supporting-frame, a carriage pivotally mounted on blocks adapted to travel on suitable tracks in said frame, av projecting arm rigidly attached to said ourriage, a link pivotally attached to the frame, an eccentrie-rocl pivotally and adjustably attached to said arm and link, and means for operating said eccentric-rod, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
