'SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,981, dated April 20, 189'?.

To all whom it' may concern,.- A

Be it known that I, GEORGE C. MARL1TT,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in .the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout both views.

This invention relates to inkstands and the object thereof is .to provide an improved device of this class in which the bottle or inkstand proper is mounted in a frame in which is mounted a vertically-movable frame which is adapted to be depressed and to bear upon an elastic convex cover secured to the neck of the bottle, whereby the ink when required for use is forced into a small receptacle at the front of the bottle, said receptacle being in communication with the ink reservoir or chamber within said bottle.

'Ihe invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiicatiomof which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved inkstand, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section thereof.

In the practice of my invention I provide a main frame which consists of vertical sides 5 and a bottom 6, and the sides 5 are provided, near their rear ends, with upwardly-directed extensions 7, and each of the upwardlydirected extensions 7 is provided, near its front edge, with a peripherally-grooved roller 8, and the sides 5 are also provided with similarlygrooved rollers 9, the rollers 9 being suitably mounted below the upwardly directed extensions 7 of the sides and slightly to the rear of the rollers 8.

I also provide an ink-bottle l0, which, as shown in the drawings, is rectangular in form, but which may be of any desired shape, and the said bottle is provided centrally of its forward side with an extension ll, in the top of which is formed a cup-shaped receptacle 12, which communicates with the bottom of the ink bottle or reservoir 13 formed therein by means of a small passage 14.

4 The ink-bottle lOis preferablycountersunk in the bottom 6 of the main frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and said bottle'is provided with a neck 16, and I also provide a semispherical cap or cover 17, which is composed of soft rubber, rubber and canvas, or similar material and which is provided with an annular flange or rim 1S, which rests upon the neck 16, and said cap or cover 17 is held in place by an angular band 19, which is connected with the neck 16 by means of a screwthread. I also provide a supplemental frame, which consists of side plates 20, which are placed within the main sides 5 and which are provided at their rear ends with upwardlydirected arms 2l, and the lower ends of the side plates 2O at their rear ends press against the rollers 9, and the front edge of the upwardly-directed arms 2l press against the rollers S, and said upper ends of the arms 2l are connected by a cross-plate 22, which is provided centrally of the lower side thereof with a downwardly-directed ,screw-threaded extension 23, with which is connected a button or head 24.

The front ends of the side plates 20 of the supplemental frame are connected by a crossplate 25, in the central rear side of which is formed a semicircular opening 26, and in the normal position of the parts the button or head 24 rests on the cap or cover 17, and the cross-plate 25 is slightly above the extension ll of the bottle in which the receptacle 12 is formed.

The bottom 6 of the main frame projects in front of the extension 11 of the bottle, and mounted therein is an adjustable bolt 27, provided with a milled head 28, and the object of this adjustable bolt is to limit the downward movement of the supplemental frame, said movement being limited by the cross-plate 25 striking upon the milled button or head 28 of said bolt.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings 4and the following statement thereof.

In practice the cap or cover 17 is removed and the bottle iilled with ink in the usual manner, after which the cap or cover is secured in place, and the bottle is placed in the main frame, and the supplemental frame is then placed in position, and whenever it is desired to ink apen the supplemental frame IOO is depressed by pressing on the cross-plate 25 with the thumb or finger. The supplemental frame is retained in its highest position by the cap or cover 17, which is so constructed as to possess considerable resistance, and when pressure is applied to the cross-plate 25, as above described, the button or head 21 presses upon the cap or cover 17 and said cap or cover is depressed and the ink is forced into the receptacle l2, and as soon as the pressure upon the plate 25 is removed the cap or cover 17 forces the supplemental frame back into the position shown in Fig. 2 and the ink flows back from said receptacle 12 into the bottle or reservoir 13 therein, and this operation of depressing the supplemental frame mustbe repeated whenever it is required to ink the pen.

The advantages of this construction will be apparent to all those familiar with this class of devices. The ink is clean at all times and the evaporation thereof is reduced to a minimum, as the only portion exposed to the air is that in the passage 1l, which is very small in cross-section.

I may also provide a cap or cover for the receptacle 12, if desired, and it is evident that changes in and moditieations of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrilieing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an inlistand, the combination with a main frame, of an ink-bottle mounted therein, and provided with a forwardly-directed eX- tension in the top of which is formed a receptacle, which is in communication with the bottom of the reservoir within the bottle, said bottle being also provided with a neck, which is closed by an elastic depressible cap or cover, and a vertically-movable supplemental frame supported by said cap or cover, and adapted to be depressed so as to force the ink into said receptacle, said vertically-movable frame, consisting of side plates mounted within the side plates of the main frame, and provided with a cross-plate by which the front ends thereof, are connected, the rear ends of said plates being provided with upwardly-directed arms, which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-plate which is provided centrally with abutton or head which is adapted to bear on the cap or cover of the bottle, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an inkstand, the combination with a main frame, of an ink-bottle mounted therein, and provided with a forwardly-directed extension in the top of which is formed a receptacle, which is in communication with the bottom oi' the reservoir within the bottle, said bottle being also provided with a necl'z, which is closed by an elastic depressible cap or cover, and a vertically-movable supplemental frame supported by said cap or cover, and adapted to be depressed so as to force the ink into said receptacle, said vertically-movable frame, consisting of side plates mounted within the side plates of the main frame, and provided with a cross-plate by which the front ends thereof are connected, the rear ends of said plates being provided with upwardly-di rected arms, which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-plate which is provided centrally with a button or head which is adapted to bear on the cap or cover of the bottle, and said upwardly-directed arms of the supplemental frame being placed between suitably-mounted rollers at each side of the main frame, substantially as shown and described.
