NANCY E. PARKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COVER FOR SlNK-OPENINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 580,647, dated. .April 13, 1897. u
Application led November 27, 1896. Serial No. 613,586. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, NANCY E. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Sink-Openings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide 'a simple, economical, and efficient cover for sink-,openings 5 and the invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter describedand claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan View of myimproved cover, looking at it from the top; Fig. 2, a similar View look-r ing at it from the bottom, and Fig. 3 a vertical sectional elevation taken through the center.
It is often desirable to use a sink, especially in small apartments, for the purpose of Washing articles therein or accumulating water to wash the sink itself. My invention therefore is intended primarily to provide acover for the opening in a sink, so that water 'can be accumulated therein.
In constructing my improvements I make a concavo-convex upper portion A, formed, preferably, of tinned or galvanized iron. I next provide a substantially similar portion B for the under side, and provided, preferably, with a flanged shoulder b. Between these two parts or at their circumferential edges I insert a cushioning-ring C, formed,
preferably, of rubber or similar elastic mate# ri al. The parts are securely held together by means of a threaded bolt D and nuts d. The head of the bolt is further provided with a finger-ring D for the purpose of enabling the easy and ready handling of the cover.
In operation the threaded stem of the bolt is inserted in the central opening of the sinkcover, which prevents the lateral movement of the cover, while the weight of the water on the cover forces the cushioned ring in close contact with the bottom of the sink and prevents the water from flowing through the opening.
While I have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regards details and as being embodied in certain precise forms, I do not desire to be limited thereto unduly or no more than is pointed out in the claims.
I claim l. -In a cover for sink-openings, the combination of an upper convexo-concave metallic portion, a lower conveXo-concave metallic portion, a packing inserted between said portions and extending beyond the edges thereof, a bolt and nut for securing the parts together, the bolt projecting beyond the lower portion of the packing, substantially as described.
2. In a cover for sink-openings, the combination of an upper conveXo-concave metallic portion, a lower conveXo-'concave metallic portion provided with a circumferential flange, a cushioning-ring inserted between such portions and extending beyond the edges thereof and positioned by the flange of the lower metallic portion, a boltandnut mechanism for securing the parts together the bolt being provided with a stem projecting beyond the lower portion of the cover-cushion, substantially as described.
NANCY E. PARKER.
