STATES UNITE! PATENT *T'FFICE;
TOWNSEND STITES, OF GLOUCESTER CITY, NEWV JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE WELSBAOH LIGHT COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
. MEANS FOR TRANSPORTING WELSBACH OR OTHER MANTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,626, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed July 23,1896. Serial No. 600,195. (No model.)
To all whom it natty concern.-
Be it known that I, TOWNSEND STITEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Gloucester, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Means for Transporting Welsbach or other Mantles, of which the following is a specification.
For the success of WVelsbach and other incandescent gas-lightin g it is necessary for manufacturers to furnish consumers or users with renewals of mantles or incandescents. Such mantles or incandescents usually comprise a network of oxids and are fragile and quite easily broken or damaged.
It is the object of my invention to provide comparatively inexpensive and efficient means whereby such mantles or incandescents may be safely packed, transported, and unpacked; and to this end my invention comprises the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is an elevational View showing means for shipping mantles and illustrating features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of Fig. 1 after the cap has been removed from the end of the device shown therein, and Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the forked key or clevis shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the drawings, CL is a tube or receptacle shown as circular in cross-section and adapted for the reception of a mantle orincandescent 17, of which one is shown in the drawings, although two may be similarly placed and secured, one at each end of the receptacle or tube. The incandescent or mantle b is suspended from a ring 0, closed by a knot d and ranging at right angles to a rod 6. These parts 0 cl e com prise what is commonly designated a mantle-support. It will be noted that between the rod eand knot d there is a shank f.
g is a longitudinally-ranging slot or notch provided for the reception of the shank f.
To protect the mantle or incandescent b from breakage while in transportation and while being packed and unpacked, it is important that its axis should substantially coincide with the axis of the tube or receptacle and that it should not be pressed upon the internal walls of the tube or receptacle. To accomplish this object, use is made of a detachable or removable forked key or clevis h, one leg of which passes on each side of the shank f and enters between the knot and the internal walls of the receptacle or tube adjacent to the notch g, thus preventing the ring or loop 0 from being displaced laterally and thus insuring the proper central position of the mantle. One leg 7t of the forked key or clevis is illustrated as being thicker than the other 71., in order to properly engage the knot in such manner that the central disposition of the tube is insured, although the knot is not disposed at right angles to the shank, as will appear by reference to Fig. 3. The upper portion of the forked key or clevis It affords means by which it may be grasped between the fingers for the purpose of removing and inserting it. To this end this upper portion may be permitted to extend beyond the end of the tube or receptacle, as shown. For the purpose of holding the rod 6 use is made of a band encompassing it and the tube or receptacle, so that the rod is firmly held against the exterior of the tube or receptacle. As shown, this band t is wound spirally, and not only encompasses the rod, but also affords means for attaching the lids or covers j and j to place.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains that modifications may be made in details without departing from the spiritthereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but,
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Means for transporting VVelsbach and other fragile mantles or incandescents comprising the combination of, a tube or receptacle, a mantle-support provided with a shank, a forked key or clevis accommodating said shank and Wedging the support in respect to the tube or receptacle, and means for attaching the rod of the support to the tube or receptacle, substantially as described.
2. Means for transporting Welsbaeh and other fragile mantles or incandescents comprising the combination of, a tube or receptacle notched at its end, a mantle-support provided with a knot and With a shank adapted to said notch, a forked key or clevis accommodating said shank and interposed between the knot and tube or receptacle, and means for attaching the rod of the support TOWNSEND STITES.
In presence of J OHN W. TAGGART, K. M. GILLIGAN.
