B. O. UHLIG.
STRIKING APPARATUS FOR METALLIC OR OTHER SIMILAR INSTRUMENTS.
N0.,580,436. Patented Apr. 13, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
ERNST OSCAR UHLIG, OF LElPSIG-GOHLTS, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO UHLIG, SOHYVERIN & 00., FABRIK MECHANISOHER KINDERMUSIK-INSTRUMENTE,
or sAME PLAcE.
STRIKING APPARATUS FOR METALLIC OR OTHER SIMILAR lNSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 580,436, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed July 21, 1896. Serial No. 599,994. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNST OSCAR UHLIG, manufacturer of mechanical musical instruments, a citizen of the Empire of Germany,
residing at Leipsic-Gohlis, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Striking Apparatus for Metallic or Similar Instruments, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a simple form of musical instrument in which the hammers will be operated by the passage of a perforated strip.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view with the hammer back, and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the hammer thrown forward.
The sounds are produced by the hammers dstriking the keys I), which are arranged in series and consist of cross-bars. The shanks of the hammers incline from each other, as shown in Fig. 1, and each hammer-shank is bent back upon itself, as shown in Figs. 2
and 3, and has a tang or spur which enters the block P. The double portion a of the shank extends below the block to be in the path of the openings g in a movable sheet g, which passes between rollers Z m, and which rollers are operated by a crank 7c. The blocks 19 are supported by springs O, which also serve to return the blocks to the position shown in Fig. 3 after they have been moved by the extension c, bearing 011 the intact portion of the sheet, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen from Fig. 1 that the keyboard or series of bars is arranged above the main frame, which contains the operative parts described, and that the hammers are exposed and extend to the keyboard. This produces an instrument of simple and pleasing form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In combination, the means for moving the paper strip, the blocks p, the springs O secured to the frame and having extensions for holding the blocks and the hammers having shanks bent back upon themselves with their inner ends secured to the blocks, the double portions of the shanks forming projections beyond the blocks to engage the strip, substantially as described.
2. A musical instrument comprising the casing, the series of key-bars at one end of the same, a series of hammers arranged to strike centrally of the key-bars and having shanks arranged diverging from each other, substantially as described.
Signed at Leipsic, Germany, this 7th day of July, 1896.
ERNST OSCAR UHLIG.
