UNITED STATES *ATENI @rrrcn JAMES IV. POOLE, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
Jii L n SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 3310. 579,894, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed December 28,1895. Serial No. 573,591. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES IV. POOLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Switch-Boxes for Flush Switches, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in switch-boxes for flush switches, and the in.- vention is particularly well adapted for in candescent lights, although it may be equally useful for opening and closing electric circuits on other electrical devices.
The invention is carried out as follows, ret' erence being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a top plan view of the improved switch-box. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view of the invention, showing the wall-covering plate as removed; and Fig. at represents a top plan view of the switch-containing box.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the dilterent parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents a cup-shaped box of insulating material, having a bottom A, made in one piece therewith, as shown. To said bottom A are secured the usual binder-posts B B, provided with yielding electrodes O C, as shown in Figs. 2 and a.
Z) and b are the electric-circuit wires, secured, respectively, to the binder-posts l3 and I3, asshown in Fig. 2.
Dis the switch-stem, as usual, journaled in a suitable manner in aperforation in the boxbottom A and provided at its outer or upper end with a handle E, made of hard rubber or other suitable insulating material, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
F is the metal switch-bar, as usual, mounted upon the stem D, asshown.
The upper end of the box A is open and pro vided with a cover G, of insulating material, said cover having at its center an upwardlyprojecting cup g, extending up through a perforation in the wall-plate II, which is preferably made of metal and secured to the face of the wall I by means of suitable fasteningscrews, as shown.
1' is a recess in the wall I for receiving the switch-box and its connections, as shown in Fig. 2.
In practice I inclose the box A (which is usually made of porcelain) within a sheet metal guard or shield-cup K, (shown in Fig. 2, which serves to prevent the parts of said box from falling to pieces in case said box should accidentally become broken.
The box A, its cover G, and shield II are secured to the face-plate II by means of bolt-s L L and nuts Z Z, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By making an upwardlyprojecting cup g 011 the insulated plate G a recess is formed for receiving the lower portion of the handle E, which thereby is prevented from extending too far outside the face-plate H, and it also serves as an effectual means for insulating the cover G from the face-plate Ii, as shown in Fig. 2.
By the use of a sunken box' A of insulated material, with its bottom A made in one piece with said box, I increase the insulating properties of the switch-box and I prevent any shortcirc uiting of the switch parts liable to occur in switch-boxes having the bottom made as a separate part from the box proper.
It so desired, the box A may be secured to the wall by means of suitable screws going through perforations M M in the bottom A of the box, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- A. flush switch, consisting of a switch-box formed integral with a bottom wall A having binding-posts B B provided with yielding electrodes 0 C, switch-stem D having a switcirbar F, a cover-plate G secured to the switch-box and formed at its center with a concaved projecting cup g through which the switch-stem extends, a face-plate II applied over the cover-plate and provided with a cenname to this specification, in the presence of ti'al orifice into which the coneaved clip of two subscribingWitnesses, on this 19th dztyof the cover-plate extends, and a handle E se- December, A. 1). 1895.
cured to the switch-stem and projecting into JAMES \V. POOLE. the concavity of said projecting cup, sub- V'itnesses: staintially as described. ALBAN ANDREN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my LAURITZ N. MO'IJLEH.
