- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A'. VINCENT, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNsYLvANIA,.AssIGNOR T`O THE ELEOTRO eAs COMPANY, OE WEST VIRGINIA.
ACETYLENE-GAS-GENERATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of'Leaerg Patent No. 579,689, 'dated Mal-ch 3o, 189?.
Application tiled May 7, 1896.
To (LZZ whom z muy concern..-
le it known that I, .IosErII A.\"I.\'enN'r, of the city and county. of lxhiladelphia,in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Generating Apparatus, oi which the following; is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying 'lrawings- "This invention relates toa new and imp ovcd apparatus l'or generating gasby the co.. bination ot a liquid and a solid, and is especially applicable to the generation of acetylene gas from carbid and water.
My invention relates to that general class of apparatus in' which the carbid is held ina receptacle which 'is moved 'up and down by the pressure of the gas entering the water in its lowest position and leaving it as it moves upward.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying d rawings, inwhich- Figure l. represents a vertical cross-section through my apparatus, and Fig. E2 a crosssection through the upper part Of and at right angles to the view shown in Fig. l.
A represents a gas-hold n\\'ateI'-tank which may be of anyordinarysuitable construction. Withinthetank is the bell 1;,which, as shown, is vproyided with an arched lie'adC,\\'l1ielisup ports on giin balls the carbidlnieket D, thesaid gimbal-support-'E allowing,r the carbid-bucket to swing.;` freely in any direction, as is readily seen. Extending above the water-level and through the water is the com'lenser11`, leading into the drip-tank G, ,and thence through the carbid-drier l i, and i hence te the service-pipe ix'. lihe carbid-drier ll preferably contains quichlime, which is usei'ul not only for drying, but for talt'ing.impurities from the gas. It maybe et anysuitable i'orm, but, as shown,
' is ysupported upon the side ot' the unter-mul; A(
Serial No. 500,520. (No model- 'lhe Operation olf my apparatus will new be lhe bell l) being rereadily understood. p moved the perforated bucket D filled with carbid to the desired amount and put in position. 'lhcn the bell being replaced the carbid sinks to the desired position'in the water, I
What I'claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the water-tankA, the vertically-moving bell or holder li, floated by the water in the tank, and carrying carbidreceptacle l), the condenser F, placed in the water-tank A, extending upward into the intcrspace between the carrier and the bell andf downward in a coil in the water beneath the bell and then through the wall of the tank A, whereby the'same water su pports the bell and serves as a condensing medium for the gas, and the external drip-tank G, separately-ccnncetcd therewith, and the drier Il connected wit-h an upward extension of the pipe leading to the drip, thereby drying the air entering said pipe in part by the separation of the moisture in the drip and in part by its pas- -sage through the dryiiig-chamber, .subst-antinlly as described.
'1n testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing.witnesses.
JOSEPH A. VINCENT.
