GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,606, dated March 30, 1897. Application filed November 23, 1896. Serial No. 613,186. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JOHN W. REAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Logan and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in-the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sliding gates.
My object is to provide an improved and simple gate of the class described which can be easily manipulated whenever desirable.
Having this object in view, the invention consists of a gate comprising certain improved features and novel combinations of parts appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are elevations; Figs. 3 and 4, end views; Fig. 5, a vertical section, and Fig. 6 a horizontal section.
There is a base-piece 1, from which arise two end standards 2 and 3 and a supplemental standard 4. The base-standard is provided with a longitudinal groove 5 and guidingpieces 6 and 7. It also has two cams 8 and 9. There is a top piece 10, which has a longitudinal slot 11. Said top piece is connected to the upper ends of the end posts or standards. Pulleys 12 and 13 are journaled at the ends of the top piece, while let represents an adjacent pulley which is journaled in the end upright 2.
The numeral 15 designates a pulley which is journaled to the end upright 3. There is a main pulley 16, carried on a shaft 17, having a crank-handle 18. Said shaft is journaled in the end upright 3 and the supplemental upright 4, and the pulley lies between said uprights. There is a sliding upright 19, which has its lower end working in the groove 5 and its upper end in the slot 11.
The numeral 20 designates a gate-section which is connected to the post 19 and has a tongue 21, working in the groove 5. The said gate-section is guided by the pieces 6 and 7. There is a hinged gate-section 22, and this has an arm 23, adapted to engage with the cams 8 and 9.
The numeral 24 designates a cord or rope which is connected to the main pulley and passes around the remaining pulleys, being connected to the post 19 at the point 25. There is another rope or cord 26, which is also connected to the main pulley, but adapted to wind in an opposite direction from the rope 24., and this cord or rope passes around pulley 15, thence through a guiding-eye 27, over pulley 13, and connects to a sliding block 28 on top of the upper beam or piece.
There is alatch-lever 29, which is pivoted to the post or upright 3 and has a locking-pin 30, adapted to engage with the hinged gatesection 22.
The operation is as follows: If it is desired to allow a team to pass through the gate, the
crank-handle is turned in one direction, thereby sliding the two gate-sections aside and leaving the gate open. After the team has passed through the crank is turned in the opposite direction, whereupon the gate-sections will slide back to closed position. WVhen the gate is being opened, the arm 23 simply slides past the cam 8, but when it reaches the earn 9 it engages therewith and opens the hinged gate-section. When the gate-sections are moved back to closed position, the arm 23 engages the cam 8 and closes the hinged gatesection. hen, however, the gate-sections are completely closed, the hinged section is latched, the arm 23 being disengaged from cam 8. Therefore it is not necessary to move both sections aside when a person is to pass through the gate, as the latch can be lifted and the hinged section opened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a gate, sliding gate-sections which. are hinged together, means for sliding said sections as a whole to open the gate, and to close the same, means for automatically opening the hinged section when the gates are slid aside, and means for automatically closing said hinged section when the gate-sections are slid closed. I
2. I11 a gate, the combination with gate-sections hinged together and adapted for sliding movement, of means for sliding said sections both open and closed, an arm connected to the specification in the presence of two subscribhinged section, a cam adapted to engage said ing Witnesses. arm and 0 en the hinged section when the 7 1 gate-sectio ns are slid aside, and a second cam JOHN REAMES' 5 adapted to engage With said arm and close the Witnesses:
hinged gate-section when they are slid closed. J. S. SHIBLEY,
In testimony whereof I have signed this ANTHONY HALL.
