` J. GAILLET.
MEANS POR JOINING SEGTIONS 0F BOXES.
Patented'Mar. so, 1897.
No. 579,560*l JUSTIN CAILLET, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES BASTIAN, OF SAME PLACE.
MEANS FOR JOlNING SECTIONS OF BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,560, dated March 30, 1897.
Application lled August 30, 1895.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JUSTIN CAILLET, a citizen of France, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVooden Boxes or Packages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates, primarily, to a joint whereby two members of a box or package may be inseparably secured together without the aid of glue or other adhesives, whereby such members may not be separated without entailing the destruction of the box or package and hence the detection of fraud should the package be opened by unauthorized persons.
The object of my invention is to provide a box or package whose members shall be capable of being inseparably united without the aid of glue or other adhesives and to open which necessitates its irreparable defacement, whereby liquors and other valuables may be shipped by express or mail with the assurance that the contents of the package will not be molested without traces of defraud being left to warn the consignee, thus also enabling dispensers of liquors or other goods to sell highclass goods per glass or other small quantity in the original package bearing the proprietors name as a guaranteeof its genuineness and precluding the package being again used for spurious goods; and a still further object of my invention is to make a box or package havinginseparable members and being capable of being readily split open, so as to result in the destruction of the package in order to gain access to its contents.
Vith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of novelty in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts whereby the said objects and certain other objects hereinafter disclosed are attained, all as fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the said drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of a shippingpackage containing a bottle and embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view with Serial No. 560,955. (No model.)
the bottle removed, the cover and the body portion of the package being separated and the lower end of the body portion being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cover. Fig. 4i is a side elevation of the body portion.
Like signs of reference indicate-like parts throughout the several views.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings the device consists ofa shipping-package especially designed for shipping liquors, proprietary medicines,- and other like goods whose superiority is recognized through their trade-mark or the signature or reputation of the manufacturer, the
example shown in the drawings being a bottle` snugly housed within the shipping-package, so that the package will touch it at the sides and ends and thus constitute a suflicient packing for the bottle during transit and prevent the same from being broken. Preferably the entire package is constructed of wood.
l represents the body portion of the package or receptacle, which may be of any suitable contour, but is preferably complementary in shape to the exterior surface of the bottle or article to be shipped. The upper end of the body portion l at a slight distance below its extremity is provided on the inner side with a channel or recess 2, whichis preferably annular and extends entirely around the inner wall of the receptacle.
3 represents the cover or other member of the receptacle or package, which is provided with a reduced neck 4, forming a shoulder 5, which iits accurately against the upper end of the body portion I, as shown in Fig. l, and the lower end of this neck 4 is provided with an abrupt or angular lug or barb 6, which,
when the neck 4c is forced into the mouth of gq the body l, engages in the channel 2 and prevents the removal of the cover 3, the lower end of the barb 6 being tapered or rounded, so as to readily enter the mouth of the body l,
while its upper edge is formed with an abrupt shoulder, as clearly shown in Fig. 2,which engages with a complementary shoulder of the ,channel 2, so that the barb will readily enter such channel, but may not be withdrawn.
In order that the neck 4: may be sufficiently roo resilient or compressible to enter the mouth of the body l and engage in the channel 2, I provide it with a number of slits 7, extending vertically or longitudinally of the neck, so as to constitute a number of fiexible tongues, each having a portion of the barb 6 thereon. These slits 7, however, do not extend above the shoulder 5, and hence it is impossible to compress such tongues from the outside for disengaging the barb 6 from the channel 2 without splitting or breaking the cover.
Inasmuch as the body portion lis provided with a securely-fixed or integral bottom, it will be seen that when the cover 3 has once been forced into place the package becomes permanently closed, and cannot be opened without destroying` a part thereof. To the end that the contents of the package may be removed when desired, but not without leaving traces of the fact that the package has been opened, I form the body portion l of wood, as before described, in such a manner that the grain of the wood will run longitudinally of the body 1, whereby the body may be readily split in two by the insertion of a knife or other sharp instrument in its rear end. In order to better facilitate the splitting of the body l, I provide its rear end, When required, with a transverse slit 8, and, if desired, in this slit may be embedded a metallic blade or strip 9, or a strip composed of any other suitable material of sufficient strengtli, which, when partially with-drawn, as shown in Fig. 4, may be utilized as a purchase for the fingers in splitting` open the package. One of the uses of my invention consists in bottling drinks per glass or other small quantity, and to the end that the contents of the bottle may be subjected to the influence of a refrigerant while stored for sale I provide the body portion l of the package with a number of perforations l, which provide for the circulation of the cold air into immediate con tact with the contents of the package; and in order that these perforations may be utilized for assisting in splitting open the package I arrange them in a vertical line on each side of the package and in line with the ends of the slit 8, so that the split will take place along the line of perforations.
I have also shown the package as being provided in one end, preferably the end of the cover 3, with a slot l0, whereby the package, if desired, may be utilized as a temporary toy savings-bank, the slot l0 being of sufficient dimensions to admit the coins. When thus utilized, it will be seen that the withdrawal of money therefrom would entail the destruction of the bank and hence deter the depositor from making such withdrawal. To the end that the coins may not be shaken out through the slot l0, the under side of the cover 3 is tapered downwardly toward the slot 3, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
It is quite evident that the cap or cover of the package may be inserted to its full length whose upper face or side is formed at a sharp angle to the longitudinal axis of such neck, and a second member adapted to fit over said neck and having an interior groove or recess complementary in shape to said barb and adapted to receive the latter, whereby the two members will be inseparably secured together, substantially as set forth.
2. A package for the purpose described havingin combination two members, one of which is provided with a channel or recess and the other with a barb adapted to engage in said channel or recess, the upper or outer edge of said barb and the upper or outer edge of said recess being formed at an abrupt angle and constituting a hook; one of said members at least being formed of wood with the grain running longitudinally thereof and said members being inserted one within the other and the interior one being provided with longitudinal slits forming flexible tongues, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A package having in combination a meinber or section composed of wood and the grain of the wood being arranged lengthwise of said member, said member being provided with an interior channel or recess, and a second member provided with an angular, abrupt barb or lug adapted to engage in said channel or recess for inseparably locking the members together, substantially as set forth.
.4. A package having in combination a member composed of wood having the grain thereof running longitudinally of said member, said member being provided in one end with a slit for assisting in splitting it'open and in the other end of its interior with a channel or recess, and a second member having a barb or lug adapted to fit into said channel or recess for locking the members together, substantially as set forth.
5. A package having in combination a mem ber composed of material capable of splitting from end to end and having a splitting-groove 8 and a number of perforations arranged in a line longitudinally thereof and in line with said groove, said member having a channel or recess near its mouth, and a second member having a barb or lug adapted to engage in said channel or recess forlocking the niembers together, substantially as set forth.
6. Apackage havingincombinationamember composed of material capable of splitting from end to end and having a blade or key seated in its end for assisting in splitting said member open, said member being provided roo IIO
at its open end with a channel or recess, and a second member having a barb or lug adapted to engage in said channel or recess for locking the members together, substantially as set forth.
7. A package having in combination a member composed of Wood having the grain arranged longitudinally thereof, a key seated in the bottom of said member and said member having a line of perforations on each side extending longitudinally thereof and in line VWith the ends of said key, said member being provided on its interior near its mouth With a channel or recess, and a second member adapted to be inserted into said iirst member and having a barb or lug adapted to engage in said channel or recess for locking the members together, substantially as set forth.
