ICE PICK.
No. 579,325. Patented Mar. 23. 1897.

arnnr ICE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 579,325, dated March 28, 1897. Application filed April 24, 1896. Serial No. 588,928. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HUGH JAMES KINGSLE Y, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutland,in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Picks, of which the following is a specification, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to ice-picks and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be operated in the usual manner and which is also provided with a sliding knocker or weight by which it may be driven into the ice and in connection with which I employ a spring-operated jaw or clamp by which pieces of ice may be picked up and carried.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompany ing drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved icepick, and Fig. 2 a view at right angles thereto with the spring-operated jaw or clamp removed.
In the practice of my invention I provide a knob or handle A, to which is secured a shaft a, the lower end of which is provided with. a jaw a having teeth or projections a The shaft a is provided at a short distance above the jaw a with a collar a and mounted on the shaft and adapted to slide thereon is a weight or knocker B, which is provided with a central longitudinal bore 19, through which the shaft passes, and said weight is alsoprefen ably provided in one side thereof with a 1011- gitudinal slot (1 The knob or handle A is preferably provided with a neck a, and mounted on the shaft a below said neck is a spiral spring 0, and I also provide a rod D, the upper end of which is curved or bent at right angles and passed around the shaft a, so as to form an arm cl, on which the spring 0 rests, and the arm d is provided with an outwardly-directed hook or projection CF.
The lower end of the rod D is curved outwardly, as shown at 0F, and pivotally'connected with a lever G,which is pivotally connected with a shoulder or projection H, formed on the shaft a just above the jaw 0 and the lower side of the lever G is provided with a curved jaw or clamp g, which is adapted to operate in connection with the jaw a for carrying pieces of ice.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connectionwith the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The rod D is provided near its lower end and on the inner side thereof with a spring K, which is provided with an inwardly-directed projection 70, which is adapted to operate in connection with the collar o and serve as a support for the jaw g and hold it out of contact with the jaw a and said rod rests in the longitudinal slot Z) of the weight or knocker B, and whenever it is desired to use the device as a pick it is held upright upon the cake by the knob or handle A. weight or knocker B is then raised, in which operation it strikes the arm d and raises the rod D until the projection of the spring K rests upon the collar 13, when the clamp or jaw Q will be about four inches away from the jaw o The weight or knocker is then forced downwardly upon the collar a and thus will cut off a piece of ice and at the same time release the spring K, and the spring 0 will push the clamp or jaw g downwardly firmly upon the piece of ice which has been cut off. The clamp or jaw g is also provided with teeth on its lower side which will operate in connection with the teeth on the jaw a and said clamp or jaw will hold the piece of ice as long as necessary.
In order to release the piece of ice, it is only necessary to pull upward on the projection or hook (F.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is also comparatively inexpensive, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-* 1. An icepick, comprising a knob or handle, a shaft connected therewith, which is pro- The vided at its lower end with a jawhaving teeth formed thereon, and above said jaw with a collar, a knocker mounted on said shaft, and adapted to rest on said collar, a spring-open. ated rod, the upper end of which is connected with said shaft, and adapted to slide thereon, and the lower end of which is pivotally connected with a lever which is pivotally connected with said shaft, and which is also provided with a jaw or clamp, which is adapted to operate in connection with the jaw formed at the lower end of the shaft, and said rod being also provided with a spring which operates in connection with the collar formed 011 said shaft, substantially as shown and described.
2. An ice-piclgcomprising a suitable knob or handle, a shaft connected therewith, and provided with a jaw, having teeth or projections at its lower end, a sliding weight or knocker mounted on said shaft and adapted to be supported by a collar formed thereon, and a rod, the upper end of which is connected with said shaft by means of an arm which projects at right angles thereto, and on which rests a spiral spring which is mounted 011 said shaft, and the lower end of said rod being pivotally connected with a lever which is provided with a jaw which is adapted to operate in connection with the jaw formed on the shaft, and said rod being provided near its lower end with a spring which is secured to the inner side thereof, and provided with a projection which is adapted to operate in connection with said collar, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 13th day of April, 1896.
HUGH JAMES KINGSLEY.
