SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,155, dated March 23 1897. Application filed October 23,1895. Seria11l'o.56h,64=6. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES E. MARSDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful PrintingAttachment for Paper Holders and Gutters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in printing attachments for paper holders and cutters.
The object of the present invention is to provide for roll-paper holders and cutters a printing attachment which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and readily applicable to all kinds of roll-paper holders and cutters, and which will be capable of printing an advertisement or other matter on the paper as" it is reeled off the roll.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a paper holder and cutter provided with a printing attachment constructed in accordance with this invention. end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the printing attachment. Fig. at is a sectional view of the inking device, taken longitudinally of the printingroll. Fig. 5 is a similar View taken transversely of the printing-roll.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw-- ings.
1 designates a supporting-frame comprising a base, vertical standards 2, and a top piece 3, connecting the standards, and the latter are provided with suitable bearings and have journaled on them a roll at of paper. At the front side of the device is arranged a cutter 5 and at the rear side thereof is located a printing attachment 6.
The printing attachment comprises a print ing-ro1l 7, journaled in a hanger 8, and an inking mechanism. The hanger comprises a bar 9, provided with depending arms to re ceive the printing-roll 7 and its upwardlyextending arms 10, which are hinged to attachment plates or bars 11. The attachment Fig. 2 is an plates or bars are secured to the lower edge of the top piece 3, and the printing attachment is disposed at an inclination, and the printing-roll is held in contact with the roll of paper by springs 12, having their terminals connected to the arms 10 and to the attachment bars or plates.
The printing-roller is provided at its ends with elastic bands 13, which bear against the roll of paper at the ends thereof and prevent the paper from slipping and passing the roller without rotating the same. The end bands 13 are located directly over the wooden plugs or cores, which are usually inserted in the ends of the roll, and a firm bearing is obtained. The top is arranged at the center of the printing-roll and is supplied with. ink by means of a pairof inking-rolls 14, arranged parallel with each other and journaled in a vertical movable bearing-frame 15, which is arranged in a rectangular portion or bend 16 of the hanger. The bearing-frame is composed of a top piece and depending ends which are provided with lugs 17, located at opposite sides of the hanger and form ways. The printing-rolls=are yieldingly held against the type by a spring 18, arranged at the top of the bearing-frame within the loop and centrally secured to the top thereof and having its ends free and bearing against the frame 15. The ends of the inking-rolls restupon elastic bands 20, which also bear against the roll of paper and which prevent the type from being injured and insure a good impression.
Ink is supplied to the inking'rolls by means of a brush 21, mounted on the rectangular bend of the hanger and provided at opposite sides thereof with longitudinal series of tufts 22, of bristles, which bear against the inkingrolls. The back of the brush is provided with a series of passages 23, which lead to the tufts 22 and which are adapted to convey ink to the latter, and the brush operates to spread the ink evenly on the ink-rolls. As the paper is reeled from the roll 4 the printing-roller is rotated, bringing the type in contact with the paper and printing thereon advertising or other matter.
It will be seen that the printing attachment for paper holders and cutters is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is positive and reliable in operation, and
that it will insure a perfect impression and Will evenly distribute the ink and prevent blurring or smearing.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any advantages of the invention, such as Varying the length of the printingroll and adapting the hanger to the frame of the paper holder and cutter to which the attachment is to be applied.
That I claim is 1. A printing attachment for paper holders and cutters comprising a hanger designedto be hinged to the frame of a paper holder and cutter,a printin g-roll j ournaled in the hanger, an; inking-roll mounted in the hanger and yieldingly contacting with. the printing-roll, and avbrush en gaging the inking-roll and provided Withink-passages, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A printing attachment for paper holders and cutters comprising a hanger provided with a rectangular bend, a printing-roll jour naledfin the hanger and located adjacent. to the bend abearingframe arranged Within theihanger and slidingly connected with the same at the sides of the bend, inking-rolls j ournaled in thebearing-frame and contact ing, with the printing-roll, a spring engaging the bearing-frame, and holding the inkingrolls against the printing-roll, and a brush mounted on the hanger at the top thereof,
and provided at opposite sides of the same With tufts, and having ink-passages communicating with the tufts, substantially as described.
3. A printing attachment for'paper holders and cutters, comprising a hinged hanger provided With a rectangular portion, a printingrolljournaled in the hanger andv located ad-
