SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,095, dated March 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES THOMSON, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olearers for the Drawing-Rolls of Cotton Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for clearing the waste material from the draw ing-rolls employed in cotton machinery; and it consists in the employment of a clearing; disk having its face resting upon the top rolls with means for imparting rotary movement to the disk.
It also consists in imparting rotary movement to the clearing-disk by means of yieldin g pressure applied over the rolls at one side of the axis of the disk, whereby the frictional action of the rolls will serve to impart the de sired rotary movement.
It also consists in so constructing the face of the clearing-disk that the waste will be carried by the action of the rolls into a recess or opening in which it will be accumulated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a detail top viewshowing a portion of a drawing-frame the rolls of which are provided with my improved rotary clearin g-disk, a portion of the hinged cover being broken away to show the mechanism for causing the rotation of the clearing-disk. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a top View of the rotary clearing-disk removed from the drawing-frame. Fig. 4 represents an edge view of the same. Fig. 5 represents an under view of the clearing-disk, showing a modification which consists in the arrangement of a series of radial recesses or openings in the face of the clearing-disk. Fig. 6 represents a detail section showing a modification adapted for the rolls of speeders or spinning-frames. Fig. 7 represents an under view ofthe clearingdisk shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 represents a detail section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the hinged cover in its raised position. In the drawings, A represents the table of a drawing-frame B B, the lower fluted rolls; 0 O, the covered top rolls, and S the sliver, passing through the rolls. The rotary clearing-disk D is provided with a hollow hub D, which loosely fits the aperture a, made in the hinged cover E, the said hub being provided with the collar 1), whereby the clearing-disk will be retained in connection with the cover E when the said cover is raised to the position shown in Fig. 8 for the purpose of removing the collected deposit of waste. To the under side of the hinged cover E is secured the spring F, the outer end of which is provided with the antifriction-rollers G, which bear against the upper side of the disk D over the top roll 0, whereby rotary movement will be imparted to the disk D by the resulting pressure of the clearing-disk upon the top rolls at one side of the axis of the disk, while the disk is free from pressure over the rolls at the opposite side, and by reason of the rotary movement of the disk D the waste will be collected from the surface of the rolls 0 and retained in a felted sheet upon the clearing-face of the disk, the said face being provided with a frictional covering of cloth or other suitable material 70, which may be made continuous over the whole bearing side of the disk, as shown in Fig. 4, and in this case the waste will be collected in a sheet upon the annular cloth-covered face of the disk.
By providing the face of the clearing-disk D with radially-directed recesses or the radial openings m m, extending through the cloth covering and disk, as shown in Fig. 5, the action of the rolls will tend to force the waste into said recesses or through the said openings, whereby a larger deposit of waste may be accumulated before it becomes necessary to remove the deposit; and a clearingdisk of this character adapted for the rolls of a speeder or spinning-frame is shown in Figs. 6 and 7, in which the clearing-disk D is provided with the openings or m and is loosely connected forrotation by means of the bar at, extending from end to end of the cover E, and the screw 0, which loosely connects the disk to the bar.
A modification of my invention is shown in Figs. 9 and 10, in which the wooden clearingdisk D, provided at its face with a frictional cloth covering is, is held to rotate loosely upon the screw-stud 3', attached to the cover E, and is operated by means of a reciprocated springpawl H, which engages with the edge of the disk. The pawl H is attached to the sliding bar I, which is arranged at the inner side of the cover E,tl1e said barbeing loosely attached to the cover by means of the slots a a, formed in the bar, and the screw-studs Z) I); and connection is made with the reciprocating sliverguide J of the drawing-frame by means of the wire arm K, which is secured at one end in the extended base 0 of the sliver-guide J, the opposite end being held between the pendent ears CZ d of the sliding bar I,whereby the cover E may be turned upward on its hinges, as shown in Fig. 8, without causing the disconnection of the arm K from the bar I. Reciprocating movement is imparted to the guide J in drawing-frames by means of a reciprocated rod L, to which the guide J is attached, the said guide being held for movement in the slot 0 of the table A. A frictional spring M is attached to the front outer side of the cover E to bear upon the edge of the clearing disk D to prevent the backward movement of the disk during the backward movement of the spring-pawl H, so that the disk will be rotated intermittently in a for ward direction.
Instead of applying a spring and an antifriction-roller for pressing the disk against the rolls atone side of the aXis of the disk, as shown in Fig. 1, a spring F and antifriction-roller G may be employed to press upward upon the disk D, as shown in Fig. 12, thus causing the side of the disk acted upon by the spring to bear lighter upon the revolving top rolls 0 and allowing the disk to be revolved by the action of the rolls thereon at the opposite side. I
The modification in the means for rotating the clearing-disk shown in Figs. 9 and 10 and not specifically claimed in this application is claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 618,977.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the drawing-rolls, with a clearing-disk having its side arranged to bear upon the top rolls, and means forimparting rotary movement to the clearing-disk, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the drawing-rolls, with a clearing-disk having its side arranged to bear upon the top rolls, and means for causing the clearing-disk to bear with greater pressure upon the rolls at one side of its axis, than upon the other side, thus causing the rotation of the disk, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the drawing-rolls with a rotary clearing-disk provided with an opening or recess, adapted to receive the collected waste, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the drawing-rolls and the cover for the rol1s,with the clearingdisk held for rotation in the cover, substantially as described.
