Description

(No Model.) G. W. JUSTUS TOOL HOLDER.
Patented 16 Ilnrrn rnrns arnnr rrrcn.
CHARLES VVI'IMER JUSTUS, OF LIMA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONEIIALF TO ALVARO L. BONER, OF SAME PLACE.
oouaonnea.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,064, dated March 16, 1897.
Application filed November 5, 1896. Serial No. 611,150. (110 model.)
1' 0 aZZwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES VVITMERJUS- TUS, of Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Holders; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in handles for interchangeable tools or utensils, its object being to provide a handle with a simple, reliable, and easily-operated fastening device, whereby different tools or implements, provided with suitably-formed shanks, can be interchangeably employed with the same handle or holder and can also be fixed in different positions on the handle.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction and combination of parts summarized in the claims, and the following description and drawings will impart a clear understanding thereof.
Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a handle-fastening device and pitchfork, showing the fork held straight in full lines and arranged as a fork-hoe in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3is atransverse section on line 3 8, Fig. 2.
A designates an ordinary handle,on the end of which the holder B is attached. As shown, the holder consists of a rod provided with a socket Oat one end for attachment to the handle, and its other end is longitudinally slotted, as at D, for about onethird of its length, and below the slot is a projecting lug E.
On the cylindrical portion of the holder is fitted a sleeve F, having a longitudinal internal groove f, which enables the sleeve to he slid on the rod and over lug E, and near the ends of the sleeve and within it are camgrooves G and H, which open into groove f and extend partly around the inner circumference of the sleeve, either groove being adapted to slip over lug E, as indicated in the drawings, and when thus engaged longitudinal motion of the sleeve is prevented. Thus by partly turning the sleeve until lug E on ters slot f the sleeve can be slipped up or down or back and forth on the holder, and by partly rotating it, so as to cause either groove G or H to slip over lug E, the sleeve can be locked in the positions indicatedin the drawings.
I designates the tang of a fork, hoe, spade, or other implement, or the shank of a brush or other tool or utensil, which fits within slot D and is hinged therein by meansof a pin J, passing through properly-formed coincident holes in the shank and in the bifurcations of the holder, as shown. hen the shank I is turned so as to lie in slot D,sleeve F is slipped up on the holder and sufficiently over the end of the shank to prevent it turning in the holder. Then the sleeve is partly rotated, so as to cause groove G to engage lug E, whereby the sleeve is bound tightly in place and firmly holds the shank in line with the holder.
By loosening sleeve H and turning the shank I to the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, then slipping the sleeve up against the shank and turning the sleeve so as to bind lug E in groove H the fork or other implement will be held at right angles to the handle.
It will be obvious from the foregoing description and drawings that the holder can be used with all kinds of implements and tools, such as shovels, hoes, brushes, rakes, spades, &c., if the latter are provided with proper shanks I, the tools being interchangeable and detachable at will by simply loosening sleeve F and removing pivot J. I do not therefore confine myself to the employment of the device with a fork such as is shown in drawings.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. The combination of the holder having a cylindrical portion slotted at one end for the reception of a removable tool-shank pivoted in said slot; and a projecting lug substantially as described, with a sleeve having a longitudinal internal groove to permit it to be slipped over said lug, and havinginternal circumferential cam-grooves near its ends opening into said longitudinal groove, and adapted to engage said lug, for the purpose and substantially as described.
2. The combination of the handle, the holder attached thereto having a cylindrical portion slotted at its outer end as at D for the recepturning on its pivot, all substantially as and tion of a tool-shank, a pin J for pivoting said for the purpose described.
