Be it known that'I, JOSEPH O. DANDO, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Puzzles, of Which the following is a specification.

Hy invention relates to that class of puzzles which comprise a series of superposed disks having a common axis, around which they are free to turn, said disks having around their edges letters, symbols, or other charl acters intended to be brought into line with each other by adjustment of the disks, so as to form Words or other predetermined combinations of letters or characters.

A special object of my invention is to so construct a device of this class as to very materially increase the difficulty of properly arranging the disks in order to form the pre determined Words or effect the predetermined combinations, an object which I attain by pivoting the disks eccentrically in respect to each other.

A further object is to produce novel and pleasing effects of color as the disks are adjusted to form different combinations of letters or characters.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is Va face view of a puzzle constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.

The device consists of a series of superposed disks A of different diameters, pivoted together by means of the pivot pin or post a, so that each disk is free to turn around its axis.

Any desired material may be used in making the disks.

Each of the disks has, in the present instance on its upper face close to the outer edge, a series of letters, and in the use of the device the disks are intended to be adjusted so as to bring certain letters into line With each other to form Words, although in carrying out my invention the use of lettered disks is not essential, as the disks may have symbols or characters other than letters to be adj usted in accordance with the predetermined arrangement.

The disks are eccentrically pivoted, so that the ditliculty of effecting proper arrange- 5o ments of the letters or other characters is ma terially increased as compared with a device in which the disks are concentrically pivoted. For instance, the second letter necessary to form a Word may be located on that part of the second rotating disk Which overlaps that part of the iirst disk containing the iirst letter of the desiredWord. Hence the second disk would have to be ignored in forming the Word, and one of the other disks-the third disk, for instanceadjusted so as to supply the second let-ter, and this idea may be continued throughout the series and can be made susceptible of many modifications.

It is preferable to arrange the letters so as to provide for the simultaneous formation oi a number of similar Words, asshown in the drawings, thus materially increasing the difficulty of adjusting the disks, and it is also preferable to make the disks of different colors, so as to produce segmental bands of color, changing in relation to each other with each change of adjustment of the disks.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The Withiirdescribed puzzle consisting of a series of superposed disks of differentdiameters eccentrically pivoted upon the saine axis and having letters or other characters formed upon them, substantially-as specified.

2. The Within-described puzzle consisting of a series of superposed disks of different diameters distinguished from each other in color, said disks being eccentrically pivoted upon the same axis, substantially as specified.
