UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VALENTINE E. CAMPBELL, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NEW YORK.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,965, dated March 16, 1897.
Application filed December 10, 1895. Serial No. 571,697. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VALENTINE E. CAMP- BELL, of Saratoga Springs, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire-Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawing accompanying this application.
My improvement relates to a gun by which water is'projected on a fire; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing shows a longitudinal vertical section of the apparatus.
I provide a gun A of any suitable caliber, consisting, preferably, of a breech a, of thick metal, which will resist the strain, and a barrel b, of thin metal, for the purpose of insuring lightness. The breech a is curved downward at the rear, so as to hold a body of water 0, filling the whole rear part back as far as the cartridge d, the front being open for the discharge of the water. The cartridge is of ordinary form, being waterproof, and the gun is breech-loading, so that the cartridge can be applied at the rear before the water is inserted.
' As shown in the drawing, the rear end of the gun is closed by a hinged plug f and held by a link g, which swings over an extension h of the plug, but any other suitable breechloading appliance may be used. The explosive may be any of the known materials, such as gunpowder, guncotton, and nitroglycerin, or compressed air or gases may be employed.
. For the purpose of filling the breech with water a funnel k is attached on top of the gun 40 over the water-chamber, in which funnel is located a two-way cock m. When the chamber has been filled, the cock is turned to cut oit the passage, as shown in the drawing. Any other suitable cut-off may be used.
n is the hammer by which the gun is discharged, the same being of ordinary form and of service in small towns where expensive apparatus cannot -be used, and by being kept cool by the admission of successive charges of cold water it can be used rapidly and without any drawback.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for discharging water on fires, consisting of a gun with a curved breech for holding the water, a water-filling attachment provided with a cut-off, a breech-loading attachment for inserting the cartridge at the rear, and an attachment for discharging the gun, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
