IMPROVEMENT IN SHEEP AND CATTLE RACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,853, dated September 11, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. B. BROWN, of Medina, in the county of Outagamie, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Sheep and Cattle Feeding Rack and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of my invention, taken on the line 00 :0, Fig. 3, showing the device arranged for a sheep-feeding rack. Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the device when arranged for a cattle-feedin g rack. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the line 1 y, Fig. 2.

My invention consists in a rack having its roof and division-boards pivoted or hinged in such manner that the frame can be opened, and the latter placed so as to shield the troughs when the device is to be used as a cattle-feeding rack, and so that the root may be closed and the division-board thrown up, so as to leave free access to the troughs when the device is to be used as a sheep-feeding rack.

A designates the frame of the device. B B are the troughs, connected together by a bottom piece, a, running longitudinally along the device. To the bottom piece, a, there are hinged two division boards or doors, 0 0. These, in Fig. 1, are shown as thrown up toward the center of the device, and in Fig. 2 as let down to cover the troughs B.

D D are two boards pivoted longitudinally to the frame of the device. These boards constitute the roof of the device when it is used as a sheep-feeding rack, as shown in Fig. 1, and as additional sides when the device is used as a cattle-feeding rack, as shown in Fig. 2.

By reference to Fig. 1, it will be readily noticed that when the device is adapted for feeding sheep the boards D D form the roof, and the division-strips G O the back of the troughs, the latter being thrown inward toward the center of the device, and being supported in such position in any suitable manner and it will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the device is adapted for feeding cattle, the boards D D being thrown along the side of the device, so as to increase the capacity of the bin for holding hay, and yet not extending too high to prevent the cattle reaching over, and the boards 0 0 being thrown out against the sides of the device, so as to inclose or shut off the troughs. Thus the device is simple in every respect, though constructed so as to answer a double purpose.

I am aware of a patent granted It. Lovett May 15, 1866, where a device is made to answer the double purpose of a sheep and cattle feeding rack; but the arrangement of parts is entirely different from those in mine.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the pivoted or hinged boards D D, hinged division-strips C C, troughs B B, and frame A, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
