UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE V. STALLINGS, OF STRAWN, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OE ON E-HALF TO SAMUEL E. STALLIN GS, WILLIAM E. STALLINGS, AND ROBERT H. JONES.
DERRICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,368, dated March 9, 1897.
7 Application filed July 1,1896. Serial No. 597,771. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE V. STALLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Strawn, in the county of Palo Pinto and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Derricks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in derricks, the object of the same being to provide a portable device of this kind in which the derrick-frame is rotatable, the same being especially adapted for use in handling bales of cotton, baggage,
ice, and other heavy articles.
The invention consists of a base piece mounted upon wheels, a derrick-frame rotatably mounted in said base-piece, an upright in said derrick-frame,suitable bracing-beams, pulleys in the upper ends of said upright bracing-beam, a Windlass, cords passing around said Windlass and attached to a steadyinglever pivoted in said upright, and a gripping device attached to the outer end of said lever.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts,
which will be hereinafter m ore fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the same.
Like reference-n umerals indicate like parts in both views.
The base-piece 1 is .mounted upon rollers 2 2, so that the same is free to be moved easily from place to place. Resting upon the top surface of the base-piece 1 is a derrick-frame 3, which is mounted to rotate on said basepiece at its central point. The said derrickframe is made up of cross-beams 5 5 and has an upright 6 secured to it at its central point, the said upright having a gudgeon 7 upon its lower end, which projects through the crossbeam 5,'fits an opening in said base-piece -1, and serves as the pivot upon which said lifting-frame rotates. On the upper end or extension of the upright 6 is mounted a pulley 8, and said upright is also formed with a crossarm 9, having an opening 10 in its outer end, in which is mounted a guide-pulley 11. Pivoted to the opposite end of the cross-arm 9 is a steadying-lever 12, to the outer end of which is pivoted a basket or gripping device 13, as clearly shown. A brace-beam 14, having bifurcated arms, fitson each side of the upright 6, is secured at one end to one of the crossbeams 5, and extends outwardly in'a diago- 6o nal direction to a point just above the outer end of the steadying-lever 12. In this end of said bracing-beam is mounted a roller 15, as clearly shown. Mounted in upright-s 16 10, rising from the side of the derrick-frame and attached to one of the cross-beams 5, is a winding-drum 17, having a peripheral groove. 18 therein and provided with radially-extending operating-handles 19, which may consist of loops of metal or staples driven into the edge of said drum. Attached to the drum 17 is an operating-cord 20, which passes through the opening 10 in the cross-arm 9, around the pulley 8 in the upright 6, around the roller 15 in the bracing-beam 14, and connected to the outer end of the steadying-lever 12. Pivoted to one of the cross-beams 5, adjacent to the drum 17, is a stop 21, consisting of a bar with an inturned outer end 22, which is adapted to engage the openings through one or the other of the operatinghandles 19 on said drum 17 for the purpose of preventing the rotation thereof and for holding the cotton-bale or other weight elevated by the derrick at any desired point.
In using my device the bale of cotton or other matter to be elevated is attached to the gripping-tongs or basket on the outer end of said steadying-lever 12, and the drum 1? is turned by the operating-handles 19 thereon. 0 This winds the cord 20 within the peripheral groove 18 in said drum and raises the outer end of the steadying-lever 12. This lever, by reason of the fact that it moves between the bifurcated arms of which the brace-beam 5 14 is made up, is prevented from wabbling with the weight upon the outer end of it. When the desired elevation has been reached, the weight may be supported by inserting a bracing-bar 23 beneath the under side of the lever 12. The same effect may also be attained by inserting the inturned end 22 of the stop-bar 21 through the opening in one ofthe handles 19 on the drum 17. The Whole of the derrick-frame may now be rotated in one direction or the other for the purpose of dumping the cotton-bale or other weight into the receptacle in which it is desired to be put.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The combination with a base-piece, of a derrick-frame mounted to rotate thereon, an upright rising centrally from said derrickframe having a roller in the upper end or extension thereof, a cross-beam on said upright having an opening in its outer end in which is mounted a roller, a steadying-lever pivoted to the opposite end of said cross-beam, a bracing-beam having bifurcated ends secured to the lower part of said derriclcframe and extending upwardly therefrom diagonally, the arms thereof surrounding said upright and said steadying-lever, a roller in the upper end of said bracing-beam, a basket or gripping device secured to the outer end of said steadying-lever, a drum mounted to rot-ate in said derrick-frame and a cord attached to said drum, passing around the rollers in said crossbeam, said upright and said bracing-beam and attached at its outer end to said steadying-lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a base piece mounted upon rollers, of a derrick-frame mounted to rotate thereon and having antifriction-rollers on the under side thereof, an upright rising centrally from said derrickframe having a gudgeon upon its lower end which projects through the bottom of said derrick-frame and fits an opening in said base-piece, constituting the pivot upon which said derrick-frame rotates, a roller mounted in the upper end or extension of said upright, a cross-beam on said upright having an opening in one end in which is mounted a roller, a steadying-lever pivoted to the opposite end of said cross-beam, a basket or gripping device attached to the outer end of said lever, a bracing-beam having bifurcated ends attached to the lower part of said frame and extending diagonally therefrom, the arms thereof surrounding said upright and said steadying-lever, a roller in the upper end of said bracing-beam, a drum having a peripheral groove therein mounted to rotate in uprights secured. to one side of said derrickframe, handles upon the outer edge of said drum having openings therethrough, a stopbar having an inturned outer end adapted to fit within the opening in one or the other of 'said handles, and a cord attached to said drum, passing around the rollersin said crossbeam, said upright and said bracing-beam and attached at its outer end to said steadying-lever, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
' GEORGE V. STALLINGS.
