HARVEY B. HITESHEW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLEVE- LAND SCHOOL FURNITURE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJ USTAB LE SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,291, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed September 14, 1896. Serial No. 605,716. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARVEY B. HITESHEW, a citizenof the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' be fastened to the floor by screws.
My invention relates to adjustable seats which are especially adapted for school use.
The object is to provide a cheap and simple construction wherein the seat may be adjusted vertically to vary the height and horizontally to vary the position of the seat relative to the desk with which it is used.
Another object is to provide means whereby the seat may be permitted to make a complete revolution on a vertical axis, or a part of a revolution, or may be immovably fixed to the seat-support.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a seat embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan .view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional front elevation on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
. Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the base, which consists of two similarlyshaped sections a (1. These sections are fastened together near their lower ends by bolts or screws a and near their upper ends by bolts 01' screws a and the base when in use will The basesections are preferably shell-like castings, this construction making them as light as possible and leaving room between them for the operation of the seat-support. At their upper ends both sections are recessed in their approximate faces, whereby the rectangular opening a is formed between them. Two horizontally-moving clamping-jaws B B lie in this recess, and they are guided in their horizontal movements by horizontal grooves b in their outer faces and the horizontal ribs a on the base-sections, which ribs enter said grooves.
The seat-support O is a bar which passes down between the jaws B B and fits the recess b between them, and is thereby guided in its vertical movements. 1
The seat D, which may be of any suitable form, is supported upon the seat-support, to which it may be secured by any desired means, but preferably by the means shown in the drawings, which will be hereinafter described.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that the height of the seat may be varied by moving the seat-support up and down between the jaws B B, and that the seat may be carried horizontally forward and backward by moving the jaws in the opening between the base-sections. The jaws are clamped in the base, and the seat-support is clamped in the jaws by tightening the bolts o The loosening of said bolts permits the base-sections to spread apart at their upper ends slightly, butsufficiently to permit either the seat-support or the jaws, or both, to be moved as stated. The relative positions of the lower ends of the base-sections are not sensibly changed by this movement of their upper ends, because said movement is so slight that it has no appreciable effect in loosening the connections between the basesections and the floor.
In order that the slipping of the seat-sup port in the clamping-jaws or of the jaws in the base-sections shall be practically impossible when the parts are clamped as described, I form upon the contacting surfaces of said parts interlocking serrations b In the side of each base-section is a horizontal slot a. In each jaw B is a hole 19 in line with said slot. In the seat-support is a vertical slot 0 in line with said hole, and one edge of this slot is provided with rack-teeth c. A corrugated key may be passed through upon this spindle.
possible if the vertical movements of the seatsupport were effected by taking hold of the seat and pushing it down or pulling it up. The slots 6&6 in the base-sections permit the use of the key for the purpose stated whatever may be the position of the jaws in said base-sections.
On the top of the seat-support a spindle c is formed, and a socket-piece d, which is secured to the under side of the seat D, fits One horizontal groove 0 extends partly around this spindle, and a setscrew G, which screws through the socket piece, enters this groove. The seat is thus permitted to turn upon the spindle a part of a revolution and until the end of the setscrew engages with one end or the other of said groove. When the set-screw G is screwed out so that it does not engage with the spindle, the seat may make a complete revolution upon the spindle. A second set-screw G, which screws through the socket-piece and engages with the spindle, is provided for rigidly connecting the seat to the seat-support in any desired relative position.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In adjustable seats, the combination of a base having in its upper end a recess, two
clamping-jaws in said recess and movable laterallytoward and from each other and movable simultaneously forward and backward in said recess, a seat-support vertically movable between said clamping-jaws and means for fastening the jaws in the base, and the seat-support in said jaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In adjustable seats, the combination of the base composed of two sections having a recess between them, two clamping-jaws horizontally movable in said recess, a seat-support vertically movable between said jaws, a device for clamping said base-sections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In adjustable seats, the combination of the base composed of two base-sections, having a recess between them, and having the horizontal ribs a projecting into said recess, two clamping-jaws lying in said recess, having horizontal grooves 19 which receive said ribs, the seat-support lying between said jaws, a device for clamping said base-sections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. In an adjustable seat, the combination of two base-sections having horizontal slots at, the horizontally-movable clamping-jaws which lie between said sections, each having a hole 17 the seat-support vertically movable between said clamping-jaws, and having a vertical slot 0 and the rack-teeth c, a device for clamping said base-sections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY l3. HITESHEVV.
