PAUL FLEIWIMING COX, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE COX TYPE SETTING MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TYPE-DISTRIBUTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,216, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed June 10, 1896. Serial No, 594,989. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, PAUL FLEMMING COX, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Distributing Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speciiication.
This invention is an improvement upon the type-distributing machines described in Letters Patent Nos. 550,553 and 550,555, granted to me November 26, 1895; and the object of this invention is to simplify the construction of the operative mechanisms of such machines and to render the workin g parts thereof easily accessible at all times.
The invention also has especial reference to the mechanism for imparting an intermittent movement to the test-plates, and to the mechanism for insuring register of the test-plates with the type-channels.
The invention is best summarized in the claims forming part of this specification, and the accompanyingdrawin gs illustrate the improved machine, which is hereinafter described in detail.
In said drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section through the complete machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the testplate-moving devices. Fig. 3 Vis an enlarged vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan View of the test-plate-registering devices. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail vertical section through type-reservoir and test-plate. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of parts of the casting G. Fig. 9 is a detail view of part of casting g. Fig. 10 is a view of the pusherplate-operating devices detached.
Upon a hollow vertical standard A is fixedly mounted a circular casting B, on top of which is supported a rotatable annulus b, having a series of square-cut equidistant notches b in its periphery.
Mounted on and revolving with annulus b is a circular casting C, provided with a bell-l skirt iange C to support type-line holders,
and mounted on casting C is a'circular testplate D, provided with notches D' in its periphery, over which lare fitted the test-plates, and'below and working into each notch is a type-pusher E, which are connected to and operated by a vertically-movable plate F, interposed between the test-plate disk D and casting C, as shown. The parts C, D', E, and F are constructed and operated substantially as described in my Patent No. 550,553, and it is not necessary to particularize their construction herein.
Above test-plate D is the stationary undistributed-type reservoir, which is formed, for convenience, in two parts, to wit: a lower circular part g and upper part G, both being centered on, supported by, and iXedly secured tothe standard A. The type-channels of the reservoir, however, are principally formed by removable type-holders H, hereinafter described. The part g has aseries of vertical type channels or slots g in its periphery, corresponding in number and distance apart to the test-plates on disk D. (See detail Fig. 6.) At the outer side of each slot g is a registering-plate g2, which brings the type descending into and through slots g into exact register longitudinally with slots D in disk D. The upper part G has an exterior flange G at bottom and another, G3, at top, ilange G being vertically slotted, as at G2, coincident with the slots g in part g. Flange G3 is Wider than flange G and has slots G5 in it coinciding with the-slots G2 g', and exterior to these slots are slots G4, which are adapted to receive the edges of the type-line holders H. (See detail Fig. 7.) The slots G'4 might be considered enlargements of slots G5. The upper end of part G is closed by a circular plate G6.
The holders H are U-shaped in cross-section. Their backs or bottoms project at one end, as at H', and are rounded, as shown, so as to fit to the bottoms of slots D and allow pushers E to work thereover, (see Fig. 1,) and the bottoms are cut out or slotted, as at H2, at the other end of the holder to enable the holders to be placed upon the type-channels of my type-setting machine, and for the further purpose of enabling the attendant to see when any holder containing undistributed type placed uponthe reservoir is empty.
The type-line holders H, in fact, are adapted IOO to be first automatically iilled with undistributed type by the machine described in my Patent No. 550,553, and then placed upon the reservoir of the present distributer, forming the principal type-channels thereof, as indicated in the drawings. Then they can be placed upon the skirt C and filled with distributed type and then placed upon the typesetter to supply distributed type to the channels thereof, as described in my application for a type-setting machine filed herewith. The type-line holders are thus interchangeably useful in four positions and with three differ ent machines.
By reference to Figs. 6 and 9 it will beseen that the upper ends of slots g are widened, as at g4, to receive the lower ends of holders H, which are slipped therein, as indicated in Figs. l and 6, thc inner edge of the hol-der abutting against the iiange G and the upper end of the holder tting into the slots G4, as shown, so that each holder is held in upright position.
The teS-pZae-mom'ng mechansm-0n one side of casting B is a bracket B', in which is journaled a short vertical shaft I, having a bevel-gear I on its lower end meshing with a bevel-gear K on the end of a horizontal shaft K, extending through standard A and journaled in bearings B2 of casting B. On. the shaft I above bracket B is tiXed an eccentric t', whose strap t' is pivotally connected to the end of a horizontal lever i2, pivoted on the standard A above casting B and extending beneath the annulus through a slot in the upper edge of disk B, as shown. Above the eccentric 'i is a cam-disk J, (as shown the eccentric is attached to the hub of the cam,) having a cam-groove J', which is engaged by a friction roller or stud J2, attached to a bar J 3, which is pivoted at one end to the short arm j of a bell-crank dog j, pivoted at its bend on lever 2, close to the periphery of annulus Z), the toothed arm of the dog extending toward and slightly above the eccentric, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The other end of bar J3 is bifurcated to embrace the reduced upper end of shaft I and is kept down by means of washer I2 and nut I3. The cam .I is so constructed that during forward movement of lever 'Z2 dog remains stationary with relation to the lever. As eccentric t' approaches dead-center, however, the dog is thrown into engagement with a notch of ann ulus l) by the action of cam J, remaining engaged during the back stroke of lever Z2 and thereby rotating annulus l1 and the test-plates, thc., supported thereon one notch. At end of back stroke the dog is thrown out of engagement with the notch and held out during the forward movement of lever t2. Thus an intermittent regular movement is imparted to the test-plate from the continuously-running shaft K. This mechanism is obviously useful in many machines where a regular gradual intermittent movement of a part is desired. The mechctmsm for regtsermg test-plate disk with typc-c7zamzeZs.-On the other end of shaft K is a bevel-gear K2, meshing with a bevel-gear L on the lower end of a short vertical shaft L, journaled in a bracket B3 on the side of casting B opposite bracket B. On the upper end of shaft L is a cam-disk L2, the groove in which is engaged by a friction-roller Z2 on a horizontally-sliding bar Z, whose outer end is guided in guide Z3, at tached to bracket B3. (See Figs. t and 5.) The inner end of bar Z is pivotally connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever M, connected at its bend by a lock-hinge joint to the end of a vibrating lever m, which is pivoted at its other end on a bolt m, secured in a slot N in a bracket N, attached to the casting B, by means of the opposite adjustable tap-bolts n fn, by which the pivot m of lever m can be adjusted. Lever m has a tooth m2, adapted to engage anotch b in annulusb, and the short arm M of lever M is adapt-ed to enter another notch of the annulus at the same time. A coiled .spring M2 is interposed between the lever m and long arm of lever M, so as to normally push the long arm of lever M away from lever m as far as the lock-hinge will allow, thereby bringing the short arm of the lever M nearer to tooth m2.
Then doggn is about to disengage a notch Z9', the cam L2 moves bar Z inward, thereby pushing levers M and m inward and causing the teeth M m2 to easily enter adjoining notches in annulus Z9. Then the farther in ward movement of bar Z rocks lever M on lever m, compressing spring M2, and tooth M' forces the annulus ZJ tight up against tooth m2, which is adjusted so as to hold the annulus exactly at the registering-point. Then when dogjis about to engage a notch b/ cam L2 draws bar Z outward, allowing the spring M2 to expand and thus rock lever M on lever on and loosening the grip of teeth M' m2 on the annulus. \Vhen spring M2 has expanded as far as the lock-hinge will allow,.the farther outward movement of bar Z draws levers M m entirely away from the ann ulus b, and then the dogj begins to turn it. Thus the operations of the test-plate moving and registering mechanisms alternate in proper order.
The registering mechanism can be adjusted with the greatest nicety, as will be obvious from the drawings, and is useful in many machines. y
Shaft K is driven in any suitable manner. As shown, it has a bevel-gear Kon it meshing with a bevel-gear L on the lower end of a vertical shaft 7s within the standard A, shaft 7.'. extending up through a central bearing in top plate G and having a bevel-gear 7.92 on its upper end meshing with a bevelgear O on a short shaft O, journaledin brackets on top of plate GG and driven by gears O2 o from a driven shaft o, also journaled in brackets on top of plate G5, shaft o having friction and idler pulleys o3 o2 on its end for the power-belt.
The pusher-actuating plate F is vibrated IIC;
up and down by means of rods F, connected at top to a collar F3 on the hub of plate F and at bottom to the bifurcations of a lever F2, pivoted upon a bracket attached to the side of the standard below shaft K. The end of lever F is connected to a slide-rod f, having a looped upper end embracing shaft K, so as to be guided thereby in its vertical movements, and on said slide is a frictionroller f2, engaging a cam-groove ina disk K4, keyed on shaftvK, as shown in Fig. l.
So far as the operation of distributing type is concerned it takes place as described in my patents aforementioned, and the operations of the novel mechanisms in the present distributer are obvious from the drawings, or have been sufficiently explained. It will be observed, however, that the undistributedtype reservoir is non-rotatable, the type to be distributed are contained in the holders H, which are set in position over slots g', as shown, and when the operator sees that the types have all passed from the holder he removes it and replaces it by another. This can be done without interrupting the operation of the machine, as the -channels g hold enough type to enable the operation to continue while the holders are being changed.
Having thus described my invention, What I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
l.
