BRAKE MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,155, dated March 2, 1897.

To all whom it may concern' Be it known that 1, JOHN T. MEATS, of Taunton, county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Brake Mechanism for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to brake mechanisms for looms.
In the operation of looms it is necessary that the brake be automatically applied when the shipper is automatically knocked off to stop the loom for breakage of a thread. It is necessary that the brake be automatically released when the shipper is again moved to start the loom, and it is again further necessary that some means be provided for releasing the brake when the loom is stopped, in order that it may be moved more or less by hand, as is found necessary by the operator in placing the loom in condition for further operation.
Prior to my invention a suitable brake-controlling member has been employed which is automatically moved to apply the brake when the shipperis automatically moved to stop the loom and which is also automatically moved to release the brake by return of the shipper to running position; but independent devices have been required for releasing the brake when the loom is stopped to permit movement of the loom by hand.
So far as I am aware there never has been a single brake-controlling member capable of automatically applying the brake when the shipper is moved to stop the loom and capable of automatically releasing the brake when the shipper is restored to running position, and, further, having an independent movement to release the brake while the loom is stopped.
My present invention comprehends a brake mechanism having a single controlling member which may be made to fulfil the three functions above enumerated.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a part of one end of a loom, showing the mechanism necessary to enable this invention to be understood; Fig. 2, a right-hand end elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;-
Fig. 3, a top or plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a detail showing the controlling member, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5, a sectional detail to be referred to.
In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and shown in the drawings A is part of one of the usual end frames of the loom; a, the usual crank-shaft; a, the brake-wheel; a the brake or brakeshoe pivoted at a and provided with the lever a notched to receive a suitable weight a b, the shipper-lever, moving within the usual notched slot 1) in the holding-plate h all of which are and may be of any usual or desired construction.
Depending fromthe holding-plate b I have herein shown a bracket 19 (see Fig. 5,) recessed at its lower end to receive the short shaft 0 of the brake-controlling handle or member C, said shaft 0 being retained in its proper position in said recess, as herein shown, by a cap 6 and pin b Upon the shaft 0, at its end opposite the member C, I have provided a yoke-like portion 0, the opposite ends of which constitute stops 0r lugs c 0 which, in the normal or running position of the shipper, are both in contact therewith at its inner edge.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 4, the member C is shown as provided at its outer edge with an ear, to whichis jointed at 0 one end of the lifting-rod c suitably connected at its lower end to the free end of the brake-lever a, the point of connection 0 as shown, being at the right of the vertical or dead-center, so that the normal tendency of the weight a is to turn the member C to the right into its extreme dotted position 1, Fig. 4., and thereby drop the brake-lever and apply the brake, this tendency being resisted by the stop or lug c resting upon the shipper-lever in its notch in the holding-plate.
\Vhen the shipper is knocked off, either automatically or manually, to effect the stopping of the loom, it at once springs in usual manner to the left into its dotted position, Fig. 4, and thereby permits the weight a to turn the controlling member C into its extreme right-hand position and quickly apply the brake and stop the loom.
If it is desired to release the brake while the loom is stopped and with the shipper-lever 1) still in its extreme left or dotted position, Fig. 4, the operator, by throwing the controlling member 0 from its dotted position 1 toward the shipper into its extreme lefthand or dotted position, lifts the brake-lever a and its weight and releases the brake, such movement of the controlling member carrying the point of connection 0 of the liftingrod 0 into the position at the opposite side of the vertical or dead-center line, so that the action of the weight a is now to hold the brake released.
In the present instance of my invention I have provided a suitable stop-plate 0, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4,) against which the stops or lugs c c on the controlling member may contact to limit the movement of the controlling member in either direction.
In my invention, of which one embodiment has been described, I employ but a single hand-controller, which directly or immediately operates or controls the brake. That is, the brake is applied by movement of a single hand-controller and is also released by a movement of said single hand-controller.
By my invention it is possible to provide a single hand-controller to automatically apply the brake when the shipper is released, to antomatically release the brake when the shipper is moved into supporting position, and which may be manually moved to release the brake without starting the loom, the term shipper as herein used including any device by which the starting and stopping of the loom is effected.
If the operator wishes to stop the loom by hand without applying the brake, he will by one movement throw the shipper and the brake-controlling member to the left into their dotted positions, Fig. 4.
My invention is not limited to the particular construction shown in the drawings, for it is obvious that the same may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a loom, a brake, a single hand-controller for directly operating said. brake, a shipper coo peratin g with said hand-controller whereby stopping movement of said shipper automatically causes movement of said han dcontroller to apply said brake; said han d-con' troller being adapted for engagement by the operators hand for manually moving the same independently of said shipper, to release said brake while the loom is stopped, substantially as described.
2. In a loom, a brake, a single hand-controller for directly operating the same, a cooperating shipper arranged to cause move ment of said hand-controller in one direction to apply the brake when said shipper is moved from running position to stop the loom; said hand-controller being adapted for engagement by the operator for moving the same independently of said shipper in an opposite direction from its movement by said shipper to release the brake when the loom is stopped, substantially as described.
3. In a loom, a shipper, a brake, a single hand-controller pivotally mounted on a suitable support for directly operating the said brake, a connect-ion joined to said hand-controller at one side the dead-center of the latter and normally tending to move said handcontroller in one direction to apply the brake, said shipper when in running position preventing such movement, release of the said shipper permitting such movement, said hand-controller having also a movement in an opposite direction to carry said connection to the opposite side said dead-center, to release said brake, substantially as described.
4. In a loom, a shipper, a brake, a single hand-controller pivotally mounted on a suitable support for directly operating the said brake,a connecting-rod jointed thereto at that side its dead-center opposite said shipper, said hand-controller having a movement toward said shipper to carry said joint to the opposite side said dead-center, and one or more stops to retain said controller in an intermediate position when said shipper is in running position, substantially as described.
5. In a loom, a brake, a fixed support, a single hand-controller mounted on said fixed support for directly operating the said brake, a shipper adapted to directly engage said hand-con troller,whereby stopping movement of said shipper automatically causes movement of said hand-controller to apply the brake, said hand-controller having a movement independent of said shipper to release said brake while the loom is stopped, substantially as described.
6. In a loom, a frame, a shipper, a brake,
a single hand-controller therefor connected with said brake to both apply and release the latter, said shipper when in running position preventing movement of said hand-controller to apply the brake, stopping movement of said shipper automatically causing movement of said controller to apply the brake, said hand-controller being mounted on said frame independent of said shipper and being movable by hand independently of said shipper, substantially as described.
'7. In a loom, a shipper, a brake, a single hand-controller for said brake mounted independently of said shipper, connections permanently connecting said hand-controller and said brake, stopping movement of said shipper automatically moving said hand c011- troller to apply the brake, substantially as described.
