CONVERTIBLE SIGNAL-LAMP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,079, dated March 2, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, CHARLES H. DREssEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of NewYork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Signal-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to improve lamps, especially such as are used in connection with semaphores; and it consists of certain improvements in the construction of the lamp-body, to be hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof,Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a lamp-body and a removable-top incandescent-lamp support, said support being shown as slightly raised from its seat. Fig. 2 is a like view of a lamp-body, showing a ventilating-top and an oil-pot in place.

Similar numerals of reference, Wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

1 is the lamp-body, provided with one or more lenses 2, mounted in any desirable inanner.

3 is a glazed peep-hole. Y

4 are ventilation-holes at the bottom of the lamp-body, and 5 similar holes at the top of the body, protected by depending rings 6.

7 is a removable oil-pot provided With a burner 8.

9 is a tube fixed in the lamp-body, open at top and bottom, and having its upper extremity above the lamp-burner, so that when oil is used for illuminating any current of air passing through the tube 9 will not aect the iiame. This tube 9 is designed to form a passage for the introduction of electrical conducting-wires'when it is desired to pass them y from beneath the lamp-body.

10 is a Ventilating-ring at the top of the lamp-body, and provided in its lower part with the perforations 11 for the passage of air. Above these perforations the ring is 13 is a cap-piece, to which is secured an incandescent-lamp socket or support 17, made of any approved material and in any desired manner.

14 is a lamp-bulb, and 15 16 are the electrical conductors passing to the lamp.

The cap-piece 13 is provided With a bayonet-catch 18 and holding-spring 19, so arranged as to iirmly lock the cap to the lamptop, supporting the lamp-bulb 14 securely in the desired position when the cap 13 is seated upon the ring 10.

2O is the usual carrying-bail connected to ears 21 upon the lamp-body. When my signal-lamp is arranged for use with electricity, the oil-pot 7 may be removed or left in place, but in case the supply of electricity fails the oil illumination may be put in operation in a moments time by simply removing the cappiece 13 and its connected parts, substituting a removable cap 22, having the usual ventilation, said cappiece 22 being supplied with the holding devices hereinabove described, and lighting the wick of the oil-burner 8.

It will thus be seen that a very simple signal-lamp is provided, which may be easily and quickly converted from oil illumination to electric illuminatiomor vice versa,at pleasure.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
