Description

(No Model.)
`o. H. WESTON.
BAND SAW.
No. 578,050. Patented Mar. 2, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLINTON HARRISON WESTON, OF LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN.
BAN D-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,050, dated March 2, 1897.
Application led January 4, 1897. Serial No. 617,953. (No model.)
To all tlf/wm, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON HARRISON VESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band- Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to certain improvement-s in band-saws; and the object is to improve the construction and add to the durability of the saw; and to these ends the novelty consists in the construction of the saw, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of a bandsaw embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of a portion of the bandsaw blade.
IIeretofore it has been necessary to roll or hammer the middle section of the saw longitudinally, so that when mounted the saw is driven by frictional contact of its front and back on the pulleys; otherwise the longitudinal central portion of the saw, being the same length as the front and rear edges, would be subjected to the immense strain imparted by the convex face of thepulleys, which would cause it to part or break. lI overcome this objection and at the same time dispense with the tedious and expensive process of rolling or hammering.
A represents my improved band-saw.
B B are a series of transverse slots arranged parallel to each other and extending entirely through the saw-blade from side to side, with alternate slots arranged in the same longitudinal plane.
It will be observed that the slots are constructed of equal length and that the end of each alternate slot is located nearer the cutting edge than the other alternate slot.
The opposite ends of each slot B terminate in an enlarged circular recess C, which reduces the tendency of the blade to crack at these points, while the slots themselves permit the free expansion and subsequent contraction longitudinally when the saw becomes heated in operation.
A very important feature of my improvement is the fact that the opposite ends of the slots alternate to those whose ends are nearer the cutting edge, are nearer the back of the saw, or about the same distance from the back as the intermediate slots are from the cutting edge, and as the back edge and the cutting edge are parallel there is a strip of solid metal extending entirely around the back and cutting edges, while between these strips or bands there is an intermediate strip, which allows the blade to conformto the convex faces of the band-wheels over which the saw runs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
l. As an improved article of manufacture, a band-saw blade provided with a series of transverse parallel slots, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a band-saw provided with a series of parallel slots, arranged transversely to the length of the blade, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a band-saw provided with a series of transverse parallel slots B B, arranged in alternate longitudinal planes, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As an improved article of manufacture an endless band-saw, provided with a series of transverse parallel slots of equal length, the end of each alternate slot being located nearer the cutting edge than the same end of the other alternate slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I laffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLINTON HARRISONl WESTON.
