MANGLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,017, dated. March 2, 1897. Application filed September 17, 1896. Serial No. 606,080. (No model.) Patented in Belgium May 15, 1896,1210. 121,044.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, ROBERT LENTZKOW, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Bornstedt, Brandenburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangles, of which the following is a specification.

The invention has been patented in Belgium May 15, 1896, No. 121,044.

This invention relates to mangles for rolling clothes and linen.

The invention consists in a special construction of the mangle which allows the roller to be placed in fixed bearings, the table serving as a guide and support to the clothes, being pressed against the clothes by the weight of the operator.

Thus it will be seen that at times when the machine is not used to mangle linen it will serve as an ordinary table.

At one end of the frame It the beams forming the same project beyond .the legs of the table and are provided with supports Z, preferably made of wood and carrying the bearings in which the roller 6 and the necessary gearing for driving the same are pivoted. The crank-handle a and cog-wheels m and n constitute said gearing. The supports Z further carry a fixed bar cl, which is slightly raised above the surface of the table and serves as a guide for the linen and roller-cloth.

At a suitable height above the ground the legs of the table carry a support 0, having at its free extremity a bearing 19, in which a lever h is pivoted, extending sidewise and developing into a step t', suitably constructed to serve as a stand for the operator.

The free end of the table is supported by a rod or strut resting upon the short arm of the double lever h and transferring the thrust given to said lever by the weight of the person standing on the platform at 2'. A rollercloth 0 is fastened to the roller and is made of such a length as to extend over the whole surface of the table when rolled out.

The operation of the machineis as follows: The roller-cloth c is drawn out so as to cover the surface of the table. The clothes or linen are spread out upon it. Then the operator steps onto the platform 7; and turns the handle a, thereby first drawing the linen through the narrow slit between the table and the bar 01 and then onward between the roller 1) and the surface of the table. The table bears upon the roller-cloth and clothes as they are wound upon the roller.

Having now particularly described and as-- certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that What I claim is- In combination, the frame made up of the side rails with a cross-rail at one end, a single roller at the other end of the table, a table hinged to the cross-rail and extending thence beneath the roller at the opposite end of the table, the bar d rigidly attached to the side rails and extending over the table adjacent to the single roller and the foot-lever connected to the table for operating the same, substantially as described.
