SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,941, dated March 2, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. BASTIN and LAWRENCE M. SHANER, citizens of the United States, residing at lvlurphysborough, in the county of Jackson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cabinets or receptacles, designed for use in grocery and hardware stores and the like, adapted to receive and hold any kind of goods; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction of device of this character which can be easily operated and which may be held in any desired position. The bin or receptacle is mounted on journals so as to tilt easily, and a hinged lid is provided, which is engaged by the upper edge of the bin, so that the same serves to cover the bin or receptacle and prevent ingress of dirt or other substances. The locking device for the bin comprises a notched plate on the side of the bin in proximity to its pintle, and an endwise-movable rod arranged in the wall of the inclosing case and having an arm adapted by partial rotation of the rod to enter a slot in the side wall and engage one of the notches or teeth of said plate, a spring being provided around the rod to normally hold it in its rearward position,in which position it engages the wall of the case, and when it is desired to lock the bin the rod is pulled forward until the arm comes coincident with said slot, the spring being pressed, and then by a partial rotation of the rod the arm is caused to enter the slot and engage one of the teeth or notches on the side of the bin, and thus the bin is held against tilting either forward or backward, so that the operator has both hands free for use in removing the articles from the bin and filling the bag or other receptacle.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a series of the bins, with one shown in its tilted position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged central vertical section through the same from front to rear. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section from front to rear, showing the locking device. Fig. 4. is an enlarged detail, in end elevation, of the same.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the top of a counter; B, the end thereof; 0, the lower longitudinal strip, and D the upper strip, secured in any suitable manner, the lower strip 0 being in a vertical planein advance of that of the strip D, so that the inner edge of the lower strip serves as a stop for the inward movement of the bin or receptacle. It is intended to have a plurality of these bins E arranged in compartments beneath the counter, the bins being separated by the vertical partitions F, as shown in Fig. 1, these bins being preferably, of substantially the form shown and mounted on suitable journals or bearings G, so as to be easily tilted, and preferably provided with suitable snap-catches H to hold the bins in their closed positions. The bins may be provided with suitable handles h, by which they are actuated on their pivots. The bins are removably mounted, so as to be easily taken out when desired, and on the side wall of each of the bins is a curved plate I, provided with teeth or notches, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4:, While mounted in the end wall B or in a partition F, as the case may be, is a rod J, which is adapted for free endwise movement within the opening in the wall or partition, and the inner end of said rod is screwthreaded and provided with a nut K and'the arm L, which normally stands vertical, and around this rod is a spring M, serving to normally hold the rod in itsinnermost position. The arm and the spring are arranged in a chamber N, formed in the wall B or the partition F, as the case may be, and the inner wall of this chamber has a vertical slot 0. Normally the spring forces the rod inward, so that the arm L is held to the rear of the slot, but when the bin is tilted forward and it is desired to lock the same in its position all that is necessary to do is to pull forward upon the rod, which is provided with a handle or analogous means j, and then give it a partial turn to the right, when the arm L enters the slot 0 and engages a tooth or notch of the curved plate I, and thus the bin will be securely held in its tilted position, while the operator has both hands free for handling the bag and the articles in the bin. When it is desired to release the bin, all that is necessary is to turn the rod in the other direction, when the arm L passes through the slot into the chamber N and the spring forces the rod rearward, so that the arm is brought otherwise in coincidence with the slot. The chamber N is preferably covered by a plate P, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

Q is a lid or cover, it being understood, of course, that there is one to each bin. This is hinged at its front ed ge,as at q,to the rearlower face of the strip D and extends so that its rear edge rests upon the rear edge of the bin when in its closed position, being closed by gravity and raised by engagement of the upper edge of the bin with the under side thereof as the bin is tilted,as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. As the bin is tilted back to its closed position the lid or cover automatically follows the same and keeps the same closed.

Seated in a recess or chamber in the top strip D may be placed a little tin, glass, or other receptacle R, having a transparent front plate, as seen in Fig. 1, and in which may be kept a sample of the material held in the bin.

Modifications in detail may he resorted to without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a tilting bin, of an endwise-movable and partially-rotatable rod, and an arm carried thereby adapted to engage means on the bin to hold it in its tilted position; and means for normally holding said rod in its rearmost position substantially as described.

2. The combination with a tilting bin, and a notched plate on the end wall thereof, of a rod mounted for endwise and rotary movement, and .means for normally holding said rod in its rearmost position and an arm carried by said rod and adapted to engage the notched plate; substantially as described.

3. The combination with a tilting bin, and a notched plate 011 the end wall thereof, of a rod mounted for endwise and rotary movement, and an arm carried by said rod and adapted to engage the notched plate, and a spring around said rod to normally force it inward; substantially as described.

4. The combination with a tilting bin, and the end wall of the case, having a chamber and a slot, of a rod mounted for rotary and endwise movement in the end wall of the case, means for normally forcing the rod to its rearmost position and holding it out of engagement with the notched plate on the bin, and an arm carried by the said rod. at its inner end and adapted when the rod is pulled forward and partially rotated to enter said slot and engage a notched plate on the bin; substantially as described.

5. The combination with a tilting bin, and the end wall of the case, having a chamber and a slot, of a rod mounted for rotary and endwise movement in the end wall of the case, and an arm carriedby the said rod at its inner end and adapted when the rod is pulled forward and partially rotated to enter said slot and engage a notched plate on the bin, and a spring around said rod Within said chamber; substantially as described.

6. The combination with a tilting bin, and the end wall of the case, having a chamber, and a slot, of a rod mounted for rotary and end wise movement in the end wall of the case, and an arm carried by the said rod at its inner end and adapted when the rod is pulled forward and partially rotated to enter said slot and engage a notched plate on the bin, a spring around said rod Within said chamber, and a plate on the end wall of the case covering said chamber; substantially as described.
