To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES WV. KELLY and GABRIEL H. VORE, citizens of the United States, and residents of Oregon City, Clackamas county, and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Faucet-Register, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as a part hereof.
The object of our invention is to obtain a machine to be attached to the faucets of sodafountains, beer-kegs, d50., for registering the number of times the faucet is opened for drawing off some of the liquid contained in the keg or fountain.
Our invention is especially designed to keep a check on the number of glasses of beverages sold over the counter by employees. Besides this, our device will also enable the employer to keep a record of the number of glasses drawn, to inform him if the keg or fountain is properly filled.
The construction and operation of our device are as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan section taken through a center horizontal line of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation from the opposite side of Fig. 1, with the outer door removed and parts broken away to Inore fully illustrate the cooperation of some of the parts; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details which will be more fully described when referred to later.
The numbers designate the parts referred to in the description.
The registering mechanism of our device is inclosed in a circular easel, giving it the appearance of a small alarm-clock. The exterior of the casing is provided with two jaws 2 4and 3, the lower 3 of which is hinged, by means of which jaws our device is attached to the faucet, the 'jaws being fastened together by means of ya bolt and nut 4. The vertical cylinder 5 is fastened between the jaws 2 3 by means of a nut and bolt 6, and the latter provided with a spiral spring 7 the upper end of which is fastened to the upper end of the bolt 6, and the lower end being fastened to the lower part of the cylinder 5.
To the cylinder 5 is rigidly attached a lever 8, these two parts being adapted to operate together, pivoting on the bolt 6. The lever 3 is provided with a jaw 9 at its extremity faced with a pad of rubber 10 or like suitable material. The lever Sis adjustable as to length, as will be observed from Figs. 1 and 2, and it is constructed in two pieces united by a central pivot to enable the jaw to be more conveniently placed against the side of the glass and the latter more readily under the faucet.
The cylinder 5 is provided with a slanting slot 11, (see also Fig. 8,) in which operates the pin 12, attached to a segment-spring 13, which lies against the periphery of the casing 1 between two guide-blocks 14 and 14, (see Fig.
6,) so that such spring may play up and down when moved by its pin 12, being lifted in the slot 11 by the turning of the cylinder 5.
2O is a ratchet-wheel with one hundred teeth extending around its circumference, against which press the extremities of the two arms of the segment-spring 1 3. A clearer view is given of the latter in Fig. 5. IVith each lift of the pin 12 and the segment-spring 13, attached thereto, one or the other of the arms of the spring 13 will engage the teeth of the wheel 2O and Inove the latter one tooth forward, the various parts of our device referred to being adapted to so operate.
A hand 15 is attached to the axis of the wheel 20, and each forward movement of such wheel registers one point or figure on the dial 16. At the same time the teeth of the wheel 2O lift the arm 17h, attached to the coil-spring 17, at the free end of which is a hammer 16, tapping the bell 19. The arm 17b acts as a detent for the wheel 2O to prevent the same turning back again.
21 is another ratchet-wheel with teeth on its interior face.
22 is a shoe (see Figs. 2 and 3) attached to a short spring and bearing against the teeth of the wheel 21, holding the same until moved forward by the mechanism yet to be described.
23 is a slantin g rigid wedge, and 24 a springarm rigidly attached to the axis of and revolving with wheel 20. Upon the wheel 2O (once in each of its complete revolutions) bringing the arm 24 in contact with the wedge 23 the arm 24 is lifted into engagement with the teeth of the wheel 21 and moves that one point forward, the arm 24 being thereupon released from the wedge 23 again. The axis IOO of the Wheel 21 is likewise provided with a hand 25, which indicates the one hundreds.
Our device, as is apparent, will register to teu thousand.
The face of our register is covered with a glass set in a frame hinged to the case, and the back is covered with a door, also hinged to the case. l
Now what we claim7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a faucet-registering device, a slotted case 1, having jaws 2 and 3, and means for locking the same together whereby to attach such case to a faucet, the bolt 6, the vertical cylinder 5, pivotall y suspended from the jaw 2, by the bolt 6, the slotted cylinder extending through a circular aperture in the jaw 3; a coil-spring 7, on the bolt G, the upper end of which spring is fast to such bolt; and the lower end fast to the cylinder; the extensionarm S, rigidly attached to the cylinder 5, and having a pivoting-jaw 9, at its extremity; guide-blocks 14; and 14, extending on and parallel t the verge of such slot; the segmentspring 13, with pin l2, extending through the slot in the case, and into the slot 1l in the cylinder 5; the ratchet-wheel 2O having a suitable number 0f teeth extending around its circumference; means for arresting the Wheel when not moved forward the ratchetwheel 2l and a suitable communicating mechanism for the wheels 2O and 21, so that each complete revolution of the wheel 20 will move the wheel 2l one point forward; a suitable alarm-bell, and mechanism for striking the same adapted to cooperate with the wheel 2O so that each movement thereof will cause a tap on the bell by its hammer; and a hand on the axis of each of the wheels 2O and 2l,
to note their rotations, the parts being combined and coperating as described.
2. As a faucet-registering device, a slotted case l, having jaws 2 and 3, and means for locking the same together wherebyT to attach such case to a faucet; the slotted vertical cylinder 5, pivotally suspended from the jaw 2 by the bolt 6 the cylinder extending through a circular aperture in the jaw 3; a coil-spring 7 on the bolt G, the upper end of which spring is fast to such bolt, and the lower end fast to the cylinder; the extension-arm 8, rigidly attached to the cylinder 5, and havinga pivoting-jaw 9, at its extremity; guide-blocks 14 and la extending on and parallel to the verge of such slot; the segment-spring 13 with pin 12, extending through the slot in the case, and into the slot 11 in the cylinder 5; the ratchet-wheel 2O having a suitable number of teeth extending around its circumference; the spring-detent 2G; the spring-arm 2i rigidly attached to the axis of the wheel 2O and revolving therewith; the wheel 21, with a suitable number of teeth on its interior face; the shoe 22 for arresting the wheel 2l when not moved forward; the slanting wedge 23 for throwing the toes on the arm 24C in engagement with wheel 21, once in each complete revolution of the wheel 20; a suitable alarmbell, and mechanism for striking the same; adapted to cooperate with the wheel 20, so that each movement thereof will cause a tap on the bell by its hammer; and a hand on the axis of each of the wheels 2O and 2l, to note their rotations, the parts being combincd and cooperating as described.
3. As a faucet-registering device, the combination of a horizontally-vibratable arm, carrying a jaw adapted to be engaged by the vessel filled from said faucet, a vertical bearing for said arm, means for securing said bearing to the faucet so that said arm shall be below the mou th thereof, registering mechanism likewise supported on said faucet by said means and comprising a ratchet-wheel and operating-pawl therefor, and operative connection between said arm and said pawl, whereby lateral movement of the arm operates said pawl, a spring resisting said operative movement, an alarm-bell, and a springarm carrying a hammer for striking the bell, said arm engaging the teeth of the ratchetwheel to act as a detent when the latter has been moved forward, substantially as described.
