FEED-TROUGH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,631, dated February 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABIRAM STACY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montrose, in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Feed-Troughs; and I do declare thefol lowing to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to improvements in collapsible feed-troughs; and the object is to provide a portable trough of this class that can be folded into a small compass and carried with the team.

To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved feed-trough as it appears set up for use, and Fig. 2 shows the same folded for transportation.

1 and 2 represent the front and back rails, to which are secured the opposite parallel edges 3 3 of a piece of canvas at or other suitable material forming the bottom of the trough.

The front and rear rails are each transversely divided at 5 and provided on their under side with an ordinary strap-hinge 6, which acts as a brace to support the rails in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1, and which also allows said rails to be folded parallel with each other to occupy about onehalf the length, as shown in Fig. 2.

The front rail 1 is provided with two pivoted legs 7 and 8, which support the front end of the trough when in use, and which may be folded up parallel with said rail when not in use.

9 and 10 represent two pivoted braces secured at their front end to the outer ends of the front rail by a bolt 12. The free end of each of these pivoted cross-braces is provided with a hook 13, pivoted thereto by a bolt 14:, and the shank 15 of said hook passes through an eye 16, secured to the outer ends of the back rail 2.

each abut against the contiguous face of the eye 16, which forms a comparatively rigid bearing for that end of the brace, especially so when the integral spring-arm 18 of the shank of the hook engages the opposite side of the eye 16, as shown.

Both of the hooks 13 13 may be secured to a fence-rail, the front and rear wheels of a vehicle, or any other convenient support.

20 20 represent two collapsible canvas pockets, secured at their front ends to the rail 1, and their rear ends are provided with alinkhook 21, which is detachably secured to a staple 22 on the inner side of the back rail 2.

23 represents the flexible ends of the trough, its sides and bottom being secured by rivets 24 to the canvas piece 4, and its upper edge 25 is permanently secured to the cross-braces 9 10, so as to prevent the feed spilling out at the end of the trough, and at the same time folding inwardly to occupy little space when the whole trough is folded up, as shown.

Although l have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

A collapsible feed-trough, comprising the parallel rails 1 and 2, the canvas 4 connecting said rails, the pivoted legs 7 and 8 secured to the rail 1, the braces 9 and 10 pivoted to the said rail 1, the canvas ends 23 secured to said braces and the outer ends of the canvas bottom 4, the hooks 21 pivoted to said braces, in combination with the stationary eyes 16 and staples 22 secured to the rail 2, and the collapsible pockets 20, secured at one side to the rail 1, the link-hooks 21 secured to the opposite parallel side of said pockets and adapted to engage the staples on the back rail, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
