Description

(No ModelL) I OLROCHOLL.
nnvwn FOR PRDTECTING BURNING ENDS 0F CIGARS. No 577,624. Patented Feb. 23, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSKAR ROOI-IOLL, OF soHoNEBERo, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR PROTECTING BURNING ENDS OF CIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,624, dated February 23, 1897. Application filed February 11, 1896. Serial No. 578,922. (No model.) Patented in Germany November 20, 1895, No. 86,464.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR ROOHOLL, asubject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Schoneberg, Berlin, in the Province of Brandenburg, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a Device for Protecting the Burning Ends of Cigars, (for which Letters Patent have been obtained in Germany, No. 86,464, dated November-20, 1895,) of which the following is an exact specification.
This invention refers to a device for protecting the burning ends of cigars, and is intended to be used in rainy weather for preventing the cigar from being extinguished, as well as (apart from the weather) for being enabled to put a burning cigar away into a pocket without fear of injuring the same.
In order to make the invention more clear, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters throughout the several views indicate like parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my device. Fig. 3 is an end View showing the parts as if regarded from above with respect to Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 4c is a View of the other end, showing the parts as if regarded from below with regard to Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on line 6 7 of Fig. 2.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide a cup at, having an internal diameter somewhat exceeding the diameter of a cigar, and I provide said cup at one end with a bottom, preferably of hemispherical or similar shape. I then attach to the said cup at 0 two double-armed levers 1), arranged one diametrically opposite to the other and lying parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cup. Those ends I) of said levers that extend beyond the open end of said cup are somewhat bent inward over the edge of the said cup without, however, entering the latter. Said projecting ends I) are broadened, and said broadened parts are curved so as to correspond to the curvature of the exterior surface of a cigar of normal size. The other ends of the said levers are elongated beyond the closed end of the cup at and extend considerably more over this end than do the aforementioned ends b with regard to the open end of said cup. Said elongated ends are shaped so as to form handles, and are'furnished with springs 19 that constantly tend to press the ends 6 against the cigar. Said springs may, if desired, be made in one piece with the levers, and I prefer to let them extend from the respective ends of said levers b in the direction of the cup 0t, (2'. e., to the closed end of said cup.) The ends proper of said springs may abut one against the other.
To use my device, the broadened and curved ends of the levers are moved away from each other by means of a pressure upon the handles of said levers, and the cup aforementioned is then put upon the burning end of the cigar, or the latter is, with its burning end, put into said cup, care being taken that (provided the device be intended to protect the burning cigar against being extinguished by rain or storm) the bottom of the said cup does not touch the bottom of the latter. This may be the case if the cigar is to be extinguished, but I prefer the first-mentioned manner of use, as said bottom, owing to the air remaining between the latter and the burning end of the cigar, is then prevented from becoming unduly hot.
Having now described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- I 1. In a device for protecting the burning ends of cigars, the combination with a cup closed at one end, of levers pivotally secured intermediate their ends to the cup and being arranged diametrically opposite each other andparallel with the longitudinal axis of the cup, one end of each of said levers projecting beyond the open end of the cup and being adapted to grasp a cigar, and the other end of each lever projecting beyond the closed end of the cup and forming handles, and means for normally pressing said latter ends of the levers apart for the purpose specified.
2. In a device for protecting the burning ends of cigars, the combination with a cup closed at one end, of levers pivotally secured intermediate their ends to the cup and being arranged diametrically opposite each other and parallel with the longitudinal axis of the cup, one end of each of said levers projecting beyond the open end of the cup and be- In testimony whereof I have signed my ing adapted to grasp a cigar, and the other name to this specification in the presence of end of each lever projecting beyond the closed two subscribing witnesses.
end of the cup and forming handles, and be- OSKAR ROOHOLL. 5 ing also bent to form inwardly-projecting Witnesses:
