SHOE-CHANNELING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,569, dated February 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST M. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residin gin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shoe-Channelin g Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a sole channeling and grooving machine in such a manner that the sole will be channeled and grooved evenly at the side and toe, and in which a single former can be used for cutting the blanks for both a right and left shoe, and in which the slide carrying the knives will be free to move toward and from the former independently of the carrier. This object I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view'of sufficient of a shoechanneling machine to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aside View lookingin the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, showing the tool-carrier rounding the heel. Fig. 4. is a diagram plan View showing the carrier in respect to the former.
A is the fixed standard of the machine, and on this standard is mounted the fixed cam A, having cam-grooves a on its under side in which the rollers 19 of a carriage D travel, and mounted on studs a, projecting from the cam A, is a detachable former A shaped to conform to the sole to be channeled, with the exception that it is enlarged at the heel, forming a cam a so that the tool will be drawn away from the sole as it passes around the heel, as it will be understood that soles are not channeled at the heel.
B is a driven table carrying a bevelwheel 13, geared to the driving-shaft of the machine. On this table is mounted the carriage D, carrying the channeling and grooving tools, so that as the table revolves the carriage will travel around the former, channeling and grooving the sole-blank clamped thereon.
The former A is shaped to coincide with the blank to be cut and is reversible, so that it can be taken off the studs a and reversed. Thus one former will answer for both right and left soles. At the heel portion of the former are two pins a projecting, in the present instance, on both sides of the former, so that the blank to be channeled and grooved can be adjusted against the pins and then shifted at the toe to coincide with that portion of the former, thus insuring the proper and ready adjustment of the blank in respect to the former. After the sole-blank is adjusted it is secured to the former by the clamp-plate A On the carriage D is a slide D, pressed forward by a spring within the carriage. (Shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.) The slide D can be drawn back bya lever d. (Shown in Fig. 1.) Pivoted to the slide is a plate D the pivot cl of this plate being directly under the cutting edge of the grooving-tool. Mounted on the plate are two rollers d separated sufficiently to allow the slide D to pass between them and rest against the former A The rollers as well as the slide rest against the former. Thus the position of the tool is more rigidly maintained.
The slide D is pressed against the former 'A by a spring 01 the tension of which is adjusted by a set-screw 01 and extending rearwardly from the slide D is a rod 61 which passes through a projecting portion of the plate D and on this rod is a set-nut for limiting the outward movement of the slide.
Mounted on the slide D is a head D having a tongue adapted to slideways in the slide D so that the head can be adjusted laterally on the slide, and pivoted to the head at d is a tool-carrier D on which the channeling and grooving knives e e are mounted, as well as the presser-foot 6 This presser-foot has a bearing-section e which can be detached, if necessary, or can be adjusted by operating the set-nut and using washers as filling-pieces. The presser-foot can also be adjusted longitudinally, if desired.
The tool-carrier, D to which are secured the knives and presser-foot, can be raised and lowered by means of the set-screw d, the presser spring 61 acting to keep the head down to its adjusted position.
Itwill be seen by the above-described mechanism that if ablank to be channeled is placed on the former A and clamped thereon and the machine set in motion the table 13 will draw the carriage D around the cam A, the rollers of the carriage being adapted to the groove in the cam. The tool must follow the contour of the blank to be cut, and therefore has an independent motion on the carriage. The rollers d on the carrier D and the projection i of the slide D bear upon the former A which is the exact shape of. the blank to be cut, with the exception that it is enlarged at the heel, so as to draw the knives away from the sole at that point. The carrier D works on a pivot d, which is directly under the cutting edge of the grooving-knife. Its rollers d bear against the former A as clearly shown in Fig. 4, but in making the abrupt turns, such, for instance, as rounding the toe, the slide D is pushed back by the former, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 4, the projecting portion t' extending between the rollers, so that by this means I am enabled to cut the channel and groove at a given distance from the edge entirely around the toe portion of the sole. Furthermore, by having the rollers on each side of the. bearing-point the carriage is steadied, thus insuring a cut on a positive curve.
When the rollers come in contact with the enlargement a on the former A the tools are drawn out of the blank laterally and are free from the sole as the carriage rounds the heel. Duringthis time the operator can remove the channeled sole and insert another blank, or the driving mechanism can be automatically shifted to stop the machine.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a sole-channeling machine, of a support, a reversible former adapted to be mounted thereon and shaped to conform to the sole to be channeled, pins extending from each side of the form er at the heel portion and serving as guide-stops for the adjustment of the sole, clamps for holding the sole to the former, with channeling mechanism and means for throwing said mechanism out of engagement with the sole as it rounds the heel, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a sole-channeling machine, of a carriage having channeling and grooving tools, a stationary su'pport,a reversible former conforming to the shape of the sole to be channeled, said former having an enlargement at the heel portion forming a cam, with pins on each side of the former serving as guide-stops for the adjustment of the sole to be channeled and means for clamping the sole-blank on the former, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the former, a cutting tool, a slide carrying said tool and having a projection resting against the edge of the former, a carrier for the slide having two bearings one on each side of said projection and also resting against the former, and a spring mounted between the carrier and slide and adapted to keep the slide against the former, substantially as described.
4. The combination of a fixed former, clamping mechanism for clamping the sole thereon, a carriage adapted to travel around the former, a slide on the carriage, a carrier pivoted to the slide and adapted to rest against the former, a slide D carrying the cutting-tools mounted on the carrier and having a portion extending between the rollers and bearing against the former, a spring mounted between the slide and its carrier to keep the slide against the former, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a fixed former, the clamp for clamping the sole to the former, a carriage adapted to travel around the former, a slide on the carriage, a spring to 'force the slide toward the former, a carrier pivoted to the slide so as to swing laterally, a slide D on the carrier, a spring adapted to force the slide toward the former, bearingpoints on the slide and on the carrier resting against the fixed former, a laterally-adjustable head mounted on the slide and a vertically-adjustable tool-carrier on the head and tools carried thereby, substantially as described.
