SHOE CHANNELING AND GROOVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,544, dated February 23, 1897. A li ation fil d December 4, 1895. Renewed September 80, 1896. Serial No- 607,498. (No model.)
To wZZ whom it may concern! Be it known that I, ERNEST M. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residin gin Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Shoe Ohannelin g and Grooving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct ashoe channeling and grooving machine in such a manner that aformer can be used similar to that used on a rounding machine, thus making it unnecessary to provide special formers for the channeling and grooving machine.
A further object of the invention is to so mount the tool that it can be positively adjusted toward and from the former, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of sufficient of a channeling and grooving machine to illustrate my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side View. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the former. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the cam-plate. Fig. 5 is a diagram View showing the slide resting-against the former.
A is a standard on which in the present instance is a fixed cam A, having a cam-groove a, in which the rollers or projections b of the carriage B travel.
0 is a table on which is mounted the carriage B, and this table is driven from the main shaft of the machine through a bevelpinion c and bevel-wheel c, Fig. 2, so that when power is applied the carriage B will travel around the cam A, it being connected to the table 0 by a connecting-rod c Mounted on standards a is a detachable former A having openings of for the reception of the reduced portions of the standards a and holes a for the reception ofpins e of the cam-plate E, which is mounted between the former A and the rear standard a, so that when the former is in position the cam-plate will have fixed relation to it, and in such a manner that the tool will be drawn away from the former in passing around the heel portion, as in this machine the sole is not channeled at the heel.
Both the former A and cam-plate E are detachable and reversible, so that the same parts can be used to channel the rights and lofts of the shoe-sole by simply reversing the former, and when a cam-plate is of apeculiar form this can be also reversed. This plate can be used with formers of different sizes and shapes.
A is a clamp adapted to secure the sole 00 to the former A and this clamp can be fastened in any suitable manner. The sole :1: before being channeled is preferably rounded or cut to shape, and as in most cases the former for the rounding-machine will be the same as the former for the channeler it will fit accurately on the former, and in order to enable the operator to mount it properly I provide two pins e on the cam-plate E, which extend above the former, as shown in Fig. 2, to act as stops and guides for the heel portion of the sole-blank, so that all that is necessary is simply to place the sole-blank on the former, force it against these pins, and adjust the toe, and then secure it in position by the clamp. The clamp is considerably smaller than the sole-blank, so as to allow the channeling-tool to pass around the sole.
It will be understood that the pins 6 e, as well as the pins e on the cam-plate E, extend on both sides of the plate, so that the plate can be reversed, although in some instances the pins may be only on one side Where it is not required to reverse the plate.
Mounted on the carriage B is a plate B. Pivoted to this plate at i is a carrier I, on which is a slide 1, adjustable longitudinally on the carrier by the screw t". On the face of this. carrier are two projections i which bear against the former A when the channeler is cutting.
On the slide 1 is a transversely-adjustable slide 1 to which is pivoted at i the tool-head I carrying the channeling-tool f. Adapted to slide vertically on this tool-head is a presserfoot f which rests upon the sole-blank in advance of the channeling-tool. The cuttingtools are adjustable vertically in respect to the sole by means of the set-screw i and are held to the work by means of the spring i I I preferably arrange the pivot 1' directly under the cutting edge of the grooving-tool and extend the plate B, so that it will project under the former A when the tool is cutting. Thus the tool-carriage is held rigidly in respect to the former. At the same time the carrier I is free to move laterally on this pivot, so that the two bearing-points on the slide 1 will always be in contact with the former, and as the tendency of the spring in the carriage B is to force the plate and its carrier against the former the cutting-head will be rigidly supported at all times, even in passing around a pointed toe or the corners of a square too.
A proper channel cannot be made around the toe of a pointed sole or around the corners of a square sole by the ordinary machines now in use; but by my machine the proper channel can be made, as the tool is held rig idly, no matter what portion 01": the sole is being channeled.
I preferably notch the outer end of the carrier I so as to receive the plate E, as shown in Fig. 2, although in some instances the bearing-point i may extend sufliciently below the former to come in contact with the camplate E.
It will be understood that my invention can be applied to a machine in which the tool-earriage is stationary and the former travels around a given center in respect to the tool.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the former, means for clamping a sole-blank thereon, a camplate mounted under the former and extending beyond the heel portion thereof, the toolcarrier, tools thereon, said former being detachable, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a detachable former, a cam-plate mounted under the former and extending beyond the heel portion. thereof, means for alining the former and cam-plate, pins on the cam-plate extending above the surface of the former at the heel and acting as stops for the sole-blank, a carrier and tools thereon, substantially as described.
The combination of a detachable former, a detachable cam-plate mounted under the former and extending beyond the heel portion thereof, means for alining the former and cam-plate, pins on each side of the cam-plate, the upper pins extendingabove the surface of the former at the heel and acting as stops for the sole-blank, a carrier and tools thereon, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the former, a clamp adapted to secure the sole-blank to the former, a carriage, a plate mounted on said carriage and having an extension passing under the former during the cutting operation, a carrier pivoted to said extension, aslide mounted on said carrier and adjustable toward and from the former, said slide having two bearin g-points adapted to rest against the former, and cutting-tools carried thereby, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the former, means for clamping the sole thereon, a tool-carriagc, a plate pivoted to said carriage and extending under the former when the tool is cutting, a carrier pivoted to the extension of the plate, a slide mounted on said carrier and adapted to rest against the former, an adj usting-screw for adjusting the slide longitudinally on the carrier, tools carried by said slide, substantiall y as described.
6. lhe combination in a shoe channeling and grooving machine, of the table, means for rotating the same, a fixed cam, a fixed former above the cam, a cam-plate mounted under the former, a clamp for securing the soleblank to the former, a carriage adapted to the camways in the fixed cam, a plate on the carriage, a pivoted carrier pivoted to the extended portion of the plate, said pivoted carrier passing under the former during the cutting of the blank, a longitudinally-adjustable slide mounted on the carrier having two bearing-points resting against the former when the tools are cutting, a transversely-adjustable slide mounted on the longitudinally-ad justable slide, a tool-head pivoted to the said slide, channeling and grooving cutters and a presser-foot, substantially as described.
