Description

GEORGE P. BENJAMIN,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PLAYING-CARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,345, dated February 16, 189'?.
Application led March 16, 1896.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. BENJAMIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Playing- Cards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in playing-cards.
In the manufacture of playing-cards it has been customary to produce the ordinary fifty-two individual cards which constitute the pack, and latterly there has been incorporated with the fifty-two individual cards an extra card commonly designated as the joker. It has also been suggested to incorporate with the usual pack one or more eX- tra cards having the back surface decorated or printed in the same design as the balance of the cards and provided with perforated lines forming iields or spaces, so that upon tearing such cards through the lines of perforations a series of sections of equal dimensions are secured and which may be used in lieu of ordinary counters or chips. It has also been customary to provide many varieties of devices separately from the cards which may be used to properly keep the score of the games played with the cards. Such scoring devices being provided independently from the cards are not always accessible to the players, and in such cases crude and improvised devices are employed for temporarily keeping the scores.
My invention has for its object the production of a pack of cards having all of the individual cards usually constituting the pack, and having in addition thereto one or more additional cards having one surface decorated or ornamented with the same design imposed upon the backs of the individual cards of the pack and having the opposite side or surface so printed and ruled that it shall constitute a convenient means for keeping an accurate record or tally of the games played.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a pack of ordinary playing-cards Serial No. 583,401. (No model.)
and one or more score-cards, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that those skilled inthe art to lwhich my invention pertains may fully understand the same, I will proceed to describe the characteristics and advantages of my invention, referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents in perspective a pack of ordinary playingcards with the backs or decorated surfaces exposed. Fig. 2 represents a back view of one of my improved score-cards adapted and intended to be incorporated with the other cards, and Fig. 3 represents the reverse or face view of one of such score-cards.
As will be seen by reference to Figs. 2 and 3, the rear or back surface of the score-card is imprinted with the ,same design as that imposed upon the backs of the playing-cards, and the front or plain surface is formed with a series of vertical rules Cta, dre., above which are respectively printed the words Won and L0st-. A blank space b is provided and over the same is printed the word Players,7 and a series of horizontal rule-lines c are also imprinted and upon which may be written the names of the respective players engaged in any game.
Whenever a game is won by any player whose name is recorded on the blank space b under the title of Players, a mark or score is made opposite to his name and in the column under the word Won, and if a game be lost by such player a corresponding mark is made opposite his name and in the column under the word Lost, and thus after the completion of any contest the total number of games won and lost by each contestant or player will be duly recorded and the net result will be clearly shown on the record, which will not only constitute a record which shall determine the relative scores of the players at the close of the games, but which may be preserved for future reference in determining the relative merits or standing of the players in any series of games. The score card or cards, being of the same size and design as the playing-cards, can be returned to the pack and kept therewith, so that in future contests between the same players there can be no dispute as to the IOO standing of each at the close of the preceding contest.
Whitt I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A card-package consisting of L pack of 0r dinnry playing-cards and one or more cards having the back decorated with the saine design as the playing-cards and the opposite or plain surface ruled and imprinted as described, to constitute L score-record, sub- 1o staintnlly as hercinbefore sct forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my Signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE P. BENJAMIN.
