SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 577,113, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed December 7, 1896. Serial No. 614,736. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, AMASA ORELUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnaces, (Case No. 1,) of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to furnaces, and more particularly to hot-air furnaces.
A well-known form of hot-air furnace consists of a stove in which the combustion of fuel takes place, and about which is disposed a casing of brick or galvanized sheet-iron in which the cold air is heated, iiues being provided which convey the heated air to the points of application. In furnaces of this character it has been customary to associate a radiating-chamber with the combustionchamber or fire-pot and the heating-dome, the volatile products of combustion being circulated within said radiating-chamber and then led to the chimney-way.
. The object of my invention is to provide means for retaining the heated products of combustion for a longer period of time within the radiating-chamber, thus increasing the radiating power of the furnace and effecting a considerable economy of fuel.
Generally speaking, my invention consists in so situating the outlet from the radiatingchamber that the products of combustion must pass nearly or quite to the bottom of the chamber in order to escape, and the tendency of heated vapor being to rise above that which has become cooler it will be seen that the vapor that has become the coldest will be the iirst to escape to the chimney-way, and the maximum quantity of heat will be imparted to the air for distribution with a minimum combustion of fuel.
One form of my invention will be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational View, partly in section, of a hot-air furnace embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on line 2 2, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference are used to designate similar parts in both figures.
The furnace to which I have shown myinvention as applied is of that class in which gas is used for fuel, the burner a being disposed near the bottom of the dome orcombustion-chamber b. A valve a is provided to control the How of gas to said burner. Concentrically disposed-about the dome is an annular radiating-chamber c, communication between the two being afforded by the inclosed passage el.
A partition e is provided in the radiatingchamber c, between the mouth of the passage d and a riser or outlet-pipe f, thus preventing the escape of the products of combustion until they have circulated throughout the radiatin gchamber. The mouthf of the pipe f is quite near the bottom of the radiatingchamber, thereby causing the retention of the heated vapor within the radiating-chamber for a considerable period of time and securing a maximum radiation of heat.
A supplemental or direct-draft outletpipe g is provided whose mouth is directly opposite that of the passage d. This is to provide a direct draft in starting a iire, and is closed by the damper g as soon as combustion is well underway. A damper f2 is provided in the outlet-pipe fto control the passage of vapor therethrough.
The outlet-pipes f and g are each connected with the pipe h, which leads to the chimney- Way.
Cold air is admitted Within the casing t',
and, passing upward, is heated by contact with the dome and i'adiating-chamber,bein g finally passed out to the points of application through the fines 7c 7c in the usual manner.
My invention is capable of various modifications which will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art, and I do not therefore desire to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction shown; but,
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a furnace, the combination with a IOO combustion-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination With the combustionehamber b, of the radiating-chamber c, passage d, partition e, riser or outlet-pipe f, the direct-draft pipe g, and a damper g' therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
