Description
(No Model.) J..M. SPANGLER.
VELOCIPBDE WAGON.
No. 576,746. Patented Feb. 9, 1897.
NITE STATES ATENT Fries.
JAMES M. SPANGLER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
VELOCIPEDE-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,746, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed November-28, T894. Serial No. 530,230. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. SPANGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Velocipede-lVagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the wagon, showing the tongue folded or bent to act as a guidebar or handle. Fig. 2 is a top View showing a portion of the bottom broken away and illustrating the detachable section of the bottom removed. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the tongue and illustrating the sections properly clamped to form a rigid tongue or pole. Fig. 4'is a view showing the clamp released to produce a pivotal connection of the tongue-section. the wheel-hubs, showing its detent and spring. Fig. 6 is a detached view of one of the cotters.
Fig. 7 is a detached view of one of the toothed disks. movable bottom.
The present invention has relation to velocipede-wagons; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the wagon box or body, which may be of any desired size, reference being had to the size of the velocipede-wagon designed to be constructed.
The front or forward axle B is pivotally connected at its center to the yoke or bar a, which yoke or bar is securely attached to the bottom or under side of the wagon box or body A in any convenient and well-known man ner. For the purpose of properly bracing the yoke or bar a the arm 6 may be provided and located substantially as shown in Fig. 1.
To the axle B is securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner the arm O,which arm extends forward, and to its front Fig. Sis a detached view of the re- Fig.5 is a view of one ofor forward end is pivotally attached the yoke D, to which yoke is securely attached the tongue or handle section 0, to the outer end of which section is pivotally connected the outer section of the handle or tongue cl. To the section 0 are attached the plates 0, which plates may be provided with the flanges said flanges being for the purpose of assisting the thumb-screw g and upon the screwt-hreaded rod g is located the bar it, which bar is formed of such a length that when placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 3 it will come upon the edges of the plates 6 and thereby hold the entire tongue or handle of the velocipede-wagon in a rigid condition, it being understood that the end of the section cl will come in contact with the outer end of the section 0, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
To the bottom or under side of the box or bodyA are securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner the brackets E, in which brackets is journaled thepedal-shaft F, said pedal-shaft being located substantially as illustrated in the drawings. The pedal-shaft F is provided with the pedals G, which pedals may be of any desired kind or style, reference being had to properly attaching them'to the shaft F. To the shaft F is securely attached the sprocket-Wheel H, from which sprocket-wheel leads the drive-chain I, said drive-chain passing over the sprocketwheel J, which sprocket-wheel is securely attached to the rear axle K, said rear axle being properly journaled to the brackets K, said brackets being attached at their top or upper ends to the bottom or under side of the box or body A.
Upon the rear axle K are loosely mounted the traveling wheels K which traveling wheels are provided with the pawls K and the springs K said parts being located and arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 5.
Upon the outer ends of the axle K are securely attached the toothed disks L, said toothed disks being for the purpose of communicating rotary motion to the traveling wheels K by means of the teeth formed upon the inner peripheries of the disks L engaging with the pawls K Vhen it is desired to use the wagon proper as a Velocipede, the detachable bottom M is removed and the tongue brought into substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, which position brings the section d into such a position that it can be used as a guide-bar or handle.
The object and purpose of loosely mounting the traveling wheels K upon the axle K is to provide a means for bringing the crankshaft F into operative position by turning said crank-shaft backward, if desired, and at the same time allowing the Velocipede to be turned out of a straight line by turning the forward axle, thereby allowing for the differentiated movements of the rear wheels as the wagon or velocipede travels or describes an arc of a circle.
Having fully described m y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a velocipcde-wagon, the combination of the body or box, mounted upon traveling wheels, the axle I), provided with the arm C, the yoke D pivotally attached to said arm, the tongue formed in sections, said sections hinged together, and one of said sections secured to the yoke I), substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the body or box A, provided with a detachable bottom, said box mounted upon traveling wheels, the axle B, provided with the arm. C having pivoted thereto the yoke D, the tongue-section c, attached to the yoke D, and provided with the flanged plates 6, the tongue-section (Z, provided with the screw-threaded rod g, having the thumb-screw g, and the bar 71, substan tially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES M. SPANGLER.
