Description

UNITED SEMES PATENT QEEIGE.
A. M. BRUSH, OF CLAYTON, NEW YORK.
ORGAN-REED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,671, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. M. BRUSH, of Clayton, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Organ-Reed; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being` had to the accompanying` drawing, forming part of this specification.
vThe present invention consists in the use of silver in the manufacture of organ and other similar reeds, whether alone or mixed, or alloyed with other metals, whereby a reed is obtained that is much finer, purer, more springy and elastic, and can be not only rolled harder without becoming brittle. but much thinner, and yet retain its strength, than any organ-reed heretofore in use, thus not only enabling apertectly clear', pure, and flexible .ringing and strong tone to be produced by it,
especiallyitl used for the upper or treble notes of the instrument or organ, but imparting` a sensitiveness to the reed, and consequently a pert'ectness and even or equal balance to the organ in all its tones or notes never before attained.
-In accompanying` plate of drawing an organ-reed Ais illust ated, the figure being` a plan or top view of the same.
A in'the drawing` represents an organ-reed, which in construction is similar to all such reeds, and therefore needs no particular de scription, butin the present instance is manufactured, either in part or wholly, of silver, the alloy which I prefer to use, however, and which I have found to produce the most benecial and desirable results, consisting of tive (5) parts ot' brass and one (1) part of silver; but I do not intend to limit myself to the einployment of any one particular kind of metal with the silver, as the silver may be used alone, the use ot' brass, however, greatly increasing its efficiency and durability for the purposes ot' an organ-reed.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An organ-reed made of silver, either alone or mixed, or alloyed with one or more metals.
ALEXANDER M. BRUSH.
