EDWARD G. STAPLE, OF OSHKOSH, \VISOONSIN.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,521, dated February 2, 1897. Application filed July 25, 1896. Serial No. 600,542. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. STAPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- IO pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps, and has more particular relation to improvements in the ordinary cistern-pump known as and called the pitcher-pump.
My invention consists, essentially, in a supportin g-base having a circular depression sur 2o rounding the suction-pipe opening and a corresponding circular flange integral with the suction-pipe and capable of fitting closely into said depression, packing covering the joint between the flange and the depression, and
means for clamping the cylinder portion of the pump to the base.
My invention also consists of certain other novel features and constructions, which will be hereinafter more specifically shown and considered.
Heretofore in this class of cistern-pumps the suction-pipe has been constructed integral with the base of the pump, and as this class of pumps are cast-iron pumps it has 3 5 been impossible to make further connection or extension of the suction-pipe except by soldering the extension, and therefore the use of lead pipes Was necessary. In other words, ordinary iron pipe-couplin g could not be made to extend the suction-pipe.
In my invention the suction-pipe of the pump is supported from the base and may be constructed of wrought or malleable iron, so that ordinary pipe-couplings may be attached and an iron pipe used to extend it into the cistern.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the pump embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the base and lower valve, the cylinder or top portion of the pump being removed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in each view.
A in the drawings represents the base of the pump, which is attached to the top of the sink or other support by means of screws a a. The base A has a circular flat top A, through which extends a central suction-pipe opening B. Surrounding this opening is a circular depression O. Acorresponding circular flange E, integral with the suction-pipe D, fits closely into this depression 0 and with a packing F extends beyond and covers the joint between the top A and flange E, so as to effectually prevent any leakage or suction of air. The cylinder or top portion G is clamped to the base by means of the screws H H, thereby compressing the packing F and effectually preventing leakage or suction of air. The valve I is the same as that used in ordinary cistern-pumps, and the packing F, connected therewith, is the same or of similar construction. 7
By means of my invention the suction-pipe 7 5 D may be of wrought or malleable iron, so that ordinary pipe-coupling D may be used to connect with the extension of iron pipe, if it is desired, and the use of lead pipe attached by means of soldering or wiping it is not mo essary.
In the use of cistern-pumps as now constructed the cost of the lead pipe necessary is more than the cost of iron pipe, and the services of a plumber are usually necessary in connecting the pump with the extension necessary to reach the Water in the cistern.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p A cistern-pump consisting of a base or lower portion having a flat top forming a packin g-seat provided with a central suctionpipe opening and a circular, rabbet-shaped depression surrounding the said opening, a 95 suction-pipe having a corresponding, circular integral flange, and adapted, when fitted into said depression, to be flush with the fiat top of said base portion provided at its lower end with an outwardly-extending flange having a I00 flat bottom surface, packing arranged to cover the joint formed by the flange of the suctionpipe and the rabbeted base for preventing the leakage of air and extending beyond the same between the flat top of the base and the flange of the upper pump portion, all around thereby packing the horizontal joint between the base and the upper pump portion, and means for clamping the flange of the upper 1 portion to the Hat top of the base and com 10 pressing the packing between the said parts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
