Be it known that I, BRITTON PoULsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVayne, in the county of Allen, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Raising and Lowering the Forward Ends of the Draw- Bars in Road-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improved means for raising and lowering the forward ends of the draw-bars in a road-working machine carrying a rotatable or swinging scraper-blade.
The object of my invention is to provide in aroad-working machine a simple, economical, and efficient means for securing a ready and convenient vertical adjustment of the for ward ends of the draw-bars 011 which the scraper-blade is mounted, to enable the operator to let the front end of the said blade into the ground, when arranged in a longitudinal position, for the purpose of plowing. The said means is also adapted to enable the operator to readily tilt the said blade in either direction when arranged in a transverse position without providing a pivoted connection between the said blade and its supportingring, and also obviates the necessity of reversing the blade for certain desirable operations, thereby contributing to the convenience and efficiency of the machine on which the improvement is employed. These objects I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, in which is shown my improved raising and lowering device for the front ends of the draw-bars, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement, showing the relative arrangement of the operative parts.
In Fig. 2 is shown a portion of the forward end of the usual channel-iron frame 15,which supports the working parts of the machine.
The said forward end of the frame 15 is supported upon the upper ends of the oblique brackets 20, having an integral base 18,which may also serve the function of a fifth-Wheel. Upon this base 18 my improvement is rigidly fixed by means of proper bolts at its lower end in the integral lateral lugs 17 and 19, and is further secured at its upper end by the forwardly-projecting horizontal arm 2, Whose free end is bolted to the inner face of the forward end of said frame 15. The said standard l is provided at its top with a rearwardlyprojecting perforated lug 9,in which is rotatably mounted the vertical screw-threaded shaft or rod 4, having upon its upper end the rigid bevel gear-wheel 5 and having its lower end loosely mounted in a proper perforated lug 17 I or other suitable bearing in the said supportin g-standard. Upon the said screw-threaded shaft 4 is properly mounted the internallyscrew-threaded block 11,to both sides of which are securely connected the arms of the bifurcated coupler-plate 10, by means of the lugs or pins 12, which may be made also screwt-hreaded and removable, if desired. 16 is the front end of the draw-bar rigidly secured to the said bifurcated coupler-plate 10. The free ends of the coupler-plate or draw-head are adapted to embrace the said standard 1 and are connected bya pin 14,havingthe idler l3 rotatably mounted thereon and adapted to bear against the front face of the standard 1 for the purpose of lessening the friction caused by the vertical adjustment of the said coupler and its connections.
The rearwardly-extended hand-shaft 8 has upon its rear end a proper hand-wheel (not shown, but of Well-known construction) and has its forward end loosely mounted in a proper perforated lug in the side of the integral hood or shield 3, which protects and partially incloses the meshing bevel gear-wheels 5 and 6. The said shaft or rod 8 is extended rearwardly until it is within convenient reach of the operator from the rear operating-platform and is provided upon its forward end with the rigid bevel gear-wheel 6 for actuating the said shaft 4. It is obvious that rotating the shaft or rod 8 by means of the said hand-Wheel thereon will rotate the screwthreaded shaft t in the internally-threaded block 11 by means of the meshing gears 5 and 6, and that the rotation of the said shaft 4 will raise or lower the said block 11 thereon, depending upon the direction in which the said shaft is rotated.
It will thus be seen that by the use of my improvement the operator can readily raise or lower the forward ends of the draw-bars at pleasure from his position upon the rear operating-platform of the machine, of wellknown arrangement, by the mere rotation of the operating-shaft 8, arranged and extended to within easy reach.
Having thus described my improvement and the manner of operating the same, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a road-working machine, a raising and lowering device for the purpose specified, comprising a vertical screw-shaft rotatably mounted in a proper supporting-standard, provided upon its upper end with a bevelpinion adapted for an actuating engagement with a corresponding bevel-pinion on a proper rearwardly-extended actuating-rod, the said screw-shaft having a pivotal connection with the bifurcated coupler by which the said draw-bars are vertically adjusted, all sub-- stantially as described.
2. In a road-working machine a raising and lowering device for the purpose specified, consisting of a rigid vertical standard 1 fixed upon the main frame as described, a vertical screw-shaft 4 loosely mounted as described, in the lug 9 on the said standard, and having the perforated screw-threaded block 11 with which it engages, and carrying abevel-pinion 5 on the top thereof, an operating-shaft S having a bevel-pinion 6 adapted for engagement with the pinion 5, and the bifurcated draw-head or coupler 10 connected to the said draw-bars and carrying the said block 11 and the roller 13 and adapted to inclose the said standard 1, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
