E W. M. & R. P. JONES. FENCE WIRE GLAMP.
No. 576,348.. Patented Feb. 2, 1897.
"NITE ST TES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM M. JONES AND ROBERT P. JONES, OF VAUGHNSVILLE, OHIO.
FENCE-WIRE CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,348, dated February 2, 1897.
Application filed October 15,1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM M. J ONES and ROBERT P. JONES, citizens of the United States, residin g at Vaughnsville,in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-VVire Clamps; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention is a clamp for fastening the I intersecting strands of wire fences; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate our invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 3 is a perspec tive view of the blank folded ready for application. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the upper part of the fastener clamped around the wire, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the fastening completed.
In carrying out our invention we stamp, out, or otherwise form from a piece of sheet Inetal an oblong blank A, having notches B in its side edges at the center thereof and having said side edges slightly converging toward both ends, as shown at O. The outer corners or angles of the notches are cut away, as shown at D. The blank thus formed is folded longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 3, and then slipped over the vertical strand of the fence, with the notches l3 engaging the horizontal strand. The upper portion of the clamp is then pinched tightly around the vertical strand, causing the lower portion thereof to stand away from the wire, as shown in Fig. 4. The pincers are then applied to the lower portion of the clamp, so as to pinch the same around the wire. This action causes the Serial No. 608,912. (No model.)
ends of the clamp to swing slightly toward each other and the walls of the notches to slightly approach, the result being that the walls of the notches bind against the horizontal wire and securely hold the same.
It will be readily seen from the foregoing description that we have provided a very cheap, simple, and efficient clamp for fastening the intersecting strands of wire fences. The upper and lower portions of the clamp are pinched tightly around the vertical wire, and the cut-away portions D provide room to accommodate the kink or bend in the said Wire without leaving any projecting points to out or scar the live stock which may run against the fence, and at the same time vertical slipping of the clamp is prevented. The horizontal wire passes between the back of the clamp and the kink of the vertical wire, so that it can have no independent transverse movement, while longitudinal movement thereof is prevented by the biting of the notches in the clamp and also by its being forced against the vertical wire by the back of the clamp.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with the intersecting strands of a wire fence, of a clamp consisting of an oblong body having its sides turned toward each other and pinched tightly around the vertical strand above and below the horizontal strand and having notches at the centers of said edges adapted to engage the horizontal strand and bind on the same, the corners of said notches being cut away to accommodate the bend or kink in the vertical strand. In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
