UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY GREEN, OF LAURIUM, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSEPH IV. BURNHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
TORCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 57' 6,111, dated February 2, 1897.
Application filed March 25, 1896. Serial No. 584,777. (No model.) i
To all whom it may cancer/.
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laurium, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Torches, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming apart thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to torches such as are usually employed in processions and for similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is provided with means for supporting a transparency.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved torch and a part of the handle thereof, and Fig. 2 a similar View at right angles to that of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a perspective view showing the transparencies connected with my improved torch.
In the practice of my invention I provide a tubular socket or head A, which is adapted to receive a handle 13, and said socket or head A is provided with arms D, which project outwardly and upwardly therefrom and which are preferably composed of sheet metal, and
v between the upper ends of which is pivotally supported a lamp-reservoir E, the sides of which are provided with arms F, which project outwardly and upwardly and which are pivotally connected with the upper portion of the arms D, and said reservoir is free to swing between said arms and is provided with a tube Y, through which a wick is adapted to be passed.
The sides of the arms D, or the vertical parallel portions thereof, are provided with longitudinal flanges d at each end thereof, which are inwardly curved, as shown in Fig. 1, and I also provide supports for transparencies, which consist of a transverse rod or rods H, provided with upwardly-directed arms h, and formed on or secured to the rod or rods 11 is a yoke k which is adapted to be inserted beof any desired material and which are adapted to have any desired subject-matter printed thereon. It will be seen that two of these frames or supports for transparencies are employed, one at each side of the lamp or reservoir, and, as will be observed, this device is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, the wick-tube of the lamp being situated between the frames which are adapted to support the transparencies, and in Fig. 3 I have shown the transparencies connected with their supports, and these transparencies may be provided with the pictures of the candidates, as shown in said figure, and also with any other descriptive matter, mottoes, &c., and my invention is not limited to the form,
construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such-alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a torch, which consists of a tubular head, adapted to receive a handle, and provided with upwardly-directed side arms, between which is pivotally supported a lamp, of a transparency-frame,which is detachably connected with said side arms so as to inclose said lamp, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a torch, the combination of a tubular head or socket adapted to receive a handle, of upwardly-directed side arms connected therewith, a lamp-reservoir pivoted between said side arms and provided with a wiek-tube, and transparencyframes which are connected with said side arms, consisting of wire frames which areprovided with downwardly-directed yokes, whieh are adapted to slidewithin guides or ways, secured to or formed on the arms between which the reservoir is pivoted, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7th day of March, 1896.
JOHN HENRY GREEN.
