Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BRAKE, a citizen of the United States,residin g at Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Ealing-Press, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to baling-presses, and
has for its object to provide a simple and improved construction and arrangement of rebounding devices in connection with au oscillatory sweep, whereby at the limit of the which the horse is attached.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description,and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

l designates a baling-chamber having a feed-opening 2 and a reciprocatory plunger 3, and 4 designates a vertical arbor upon which is loosely mounted a sweep or tongue 5. The
sweep or tongue operates in connection with a swinging segmental head 6, provided with terminal stops 7 and mounted coaxially with the sweep or tongue, alight segmental guard 8 being arranged upon the opposite side of the sweep or tongue from the head to prevent displacement of the parts.
This head is provided with a radial arm El, which is loosely connected with the plunger-stem 10, said stem being pivotally connected to the plunger and. having a bifurcated rear end, of which the sides or cheeks are spaced apart a distance equal to the thickness of the arm.
The connection between the sweep and the radial arm of the head consists of a slotted tumbler or link 11, having a central ear l2 pivotally mounted in a bifurcation at the extremity of said arm, and a pin 13, arranged at the extremity of the bifurcated portion of the plunger-stem and operating in the slot 14 of the tumbler.
At the beginning of a stroke the pin is at the outermost extremityof the slot in the tumbler and the latter is folded against the rear side of the arm of the head, as shown in Fig. 3, whereby the motion communicated to the plunger is rapid at the beginning of the stroke. As the plunger advances the pin moves inwardly through the slot in the tumbler until it reaches a position in contact with the inner extremity thereof, thus materially shortening the stroke as the latter progresses, and by thus shortening the stroke the leverage and t-he power are in creased. When the plunger stem passes the point of alinement with the arbor of the oscillatory l1ead,'its position in alinement therewith being indicated in Fig. 4 in full lines, the backward pressure of the material being baled moves the head forward in the direction in which it has been turned by means of the sweep or tongue and at the same time reverses the tumbler, whereby the parts, with the exception of the sweep or tongue, occupy the same position upon the opposite side of the baling-chamber as the initial position, the plunger being fully 'retracted so as to entirely open the feed-throat for the admission of a charge and the pin at the extremity of the plunger-stem being located at the outermost extremity of the slot in the tumbler. In the operation of the parts the horse Vis now reversed and caused to move in the opposite direction to carry the sweep or tongue around until broughtinto contact with the stop at the other extremity of the segmental head. This allows time for 'the introduction of the charge through the feed- IOO throat, when the movement above described is repeated. Vhen the plunger rebounds, the swinging movement of the oscillatory head withdraws the stop with which the tongue has been in Contact from engagement therewith, and the movement of the head is insufficient to bring the stop at the opposite end of the head in contact with the tongue. horse receives no jar. The operation of the head is entirely independent of the tongue by .reason of the loose mounting of the latter.
The advantage derived from the use of the oscillatory tumbler consists in the fact that it increases the return stroke or rebound of the plunger, and hence more fully opens the throat through which the material is introduced into the baling-chamber; and the construction of the slot adapts the link to fold at its rear end flat against the side of the arm, whereby as the stroke progresses the distance between the pin at the extremity of the plunger-stem and the axis of rotation of the head is shortened to increase the leverage. Furthermore, the outermost extremity of the slot in the tumbler is in alinement with the arm of the oscillatory head, and hence when the tumbler reverses it changes the point of connection of the plunger-steinv from the innermost to the outermost limit without necessitating the sliding1 of the pin on the stem in the slot of the tumbler. Thus the reversal of the mechanism at each limit of the stroke is accomplished with the minimum resistance by friction and without jar to the parts.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. In a baling-press, the combination with a rebounding plunger having a pivotal stem, a swinging sweep, and an oscillatory head mounted coaxially with, and provided with spaced stops adapted to be alternately engaged by, the sweep, and having a limited movement independently thereof, of a segmental tumbler pivotally mounted upon the head for reversal to occupy a position upon either side Hence the thereof and having a sliding connection with the plungerstem, substantially as specified.
2. In a baling-press, the combination with a rebounding plunger, of an oscillatory head provided with spaced stops and a forwardlyextending arm, a sweep or tongue mounted coaxially with the head between said stops and capable of movement independently of the head, a tumbler pivotally mounted at an intermediate point upon the extremity of said arm and adapted to be folded in contact with either side thereof, and a sliding connection between the plunger-stem and the tumbler, the outer extremity of the tumbler in either position being in alinement with the said arm, substantially as specified.
3. In a baling-press, the combination with a rebounding plunger, of an oscillatory head provided with spaced stops and a forwardly-l extending arm, a sweep or tongue mounted coaxially with the head between said stops and capable of movement independently of the head, a slotted tumbler pivotally mounted at an intermediate point upon the arm for swingin movement in the plane thereof and adapted to occupy a position in contact with either side of the arm, and a pin carried by the extremity of the plunger-stem and operating in the slot of the tumbler, substantially as specified.
4t. In a baling-press, the combination with a rebounding plunger, of an oscillatory head provided with spaced stops and a forwardlyextending arm, a sweep or tongue mounted coaxially with the head between said stops and capable of movement independently of the head, a slotted tumbler mounted at an intermediate point of its side upon the extremity of said arm and adapted to occupy a position in contact with either side of the arm, and a pin carried by the extremity of the plungerstem and operatin gin said slot, substantially as specified.
