HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,034, dated January 26, 1897.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COPE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating-Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improvement in heating-stoves, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of a stove embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one of the interior sect-ions. Fig. 3 is a section on line y 'y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1.
My invention consists in making stoves of sections of improved construction, so that instead of being obliged to carry a great many sizes of patterns to make different sizes of stoves a greater or less number of sections may be put together to form stoves of different sizes.
My improved stove consists, essentially, of three parts, first, a front section (marked A) provided with a fire-door B and a draft-door (or not, at will) and with legs (Z; second, a rear section II, provided with legs 6, closed entirely at its rear end, except for a draftopening it, both the sections A and II being open on one side, and, third, an intermediate section or sections G, open on both sides, each section being provided with an aperture a near the top to receive a rod N, provided at one end with a head 02 and arranged at the other end to engage with a screw-nut F, and at the bottom the end sections are provided with apertures to take a rod M, provided at one end with a head M and at the other end to engage with a screw-nut E. The meeting edges of the sections are arranged in any convenient way to make a close joint between them when drawn together, a good way being that shown in Fig. 3, in which one section is provided with a groove fand the adjacent edge of the next section with a tongue I) to fit in said groove.
The stove is provided with a grate I, supported on lugs formed in the sections justbelow the opening for the door B. The grate is made in sections, there being one such gratesection for each stove-section, as most clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
It is well known that the forms of grate adapted forburning coal or for burning wood differ somewhat, and there are a number of Varieties of grates for these difierent fuels, and any known form of grate may be used.
It is evident that by means of my invention a dealer may buy and carry in stock a large number of sections and may fit up stoves of different lengths for different places by simply assembling a greater or less number of sections, and using longer or shorter tierods to fasten them together, whereby the cost of carrying stock is greatly reduced, and whereby also a large saving is made in freight, as the sections may be shipped separately and put together when and where desired.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A heating-stove, consisting of a front section having a fire-door on one side and open throughout on its opposite side, a rear section having a closed side provided with a draft-hole and open throughout on the other side, a plurality of intermediate sections all in unobstructed communication at their contiguous sides, tie-rods extending through the front, rear, and intermediate sections, and a grate made in sections, each section of the stove being provided with its own grate-section, substantially as described.
