ILLIAM LINCOLN THROCKMORTON, OF BARDOLPH, ILLINOIS.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,004, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed June 26, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LINCOLN THROCKMORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bardolph, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in gates.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of sliding gates and to provide a simple, inexpensive, an d eflicient one adapted to be readily opened at a distance from either side of it to avoid dismounting or leaving a vehicle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sliding gate which may be readily arranged to permit a load of hay or any other high load to pass through the gateway.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of part-s hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appened.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate constructed in accordance with 7 this invention, the hinged section of the trackbar being swung upward to afford a passageway for high loads. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view, the gate being closed. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the track-bar.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a sliding gate suspended by suitable hangers 2 from a track-bar 3, which is supported byposts at and 5 and an upright 6, and the horizontal track-bar, the posts, and the uprights form a supportin g-frame for the gate. The horizontal track-bar is provided with a hinged section 8 and has a rail 9 arranged at one side of the track-bar and receivin g rollers 10 of the hangers 2. The main or stationary portion of the track-bar 3 is rigidly secured to the post 5 and the upright 6, and the hinged section 8 extends over the roadway or gateway and is adapted to be swung upward, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, to provide a passage-way for loads of hay or other high loads. The rail or track proper, on which the rollers or hangers are mounted, is composed of two Serial No. 597,032. (No model.)
sections, one section being secured on the hinged section 8 and the other section being secured to the main portion or body of the track-bar 3.
The outer end of the hinged section 8 of the track-bar is supported by a bracket 10, secured to the upper end 11 of the post 4 and provided with an upwardly-extending arm, forming a recess bet-ween it and the upper end of the post 4 for the reception of the trackbar. The upper end 11 of the post l is beveled to form a guide for directing the hinged section of the track-bar into the recess formed by the bracket 10 and prevent the same from catching upon the top of the post.
The upright 6 extends a considerable distance above the track-bar and is provided at its top with a horizontally-disposed resilient supporting-arm 12 and carries a pulley13, on which is arranged a cable 4 or other suitable connection, which extends downwardand on tward to within a short distance of the outer end of the hinged section 8 and which is provided at its other end with a weight. The cable-rope or other connection 14, which eX- tends to within easy reach at the base of the upright 6, enables the hinged section 8 of the track-bar to be readily swung upward when it is desired to form a passage-way for a high load.
The resilient arm 12, which is disposed hori zontally, is angularly bent, consisting of a shank or stem disposed longitudinally of the gate and an L-shaped portion extending transversely of the gate and adapted to receive and cushion the hinged section 8. The hinge 15, which connects the hinged section to the main portion or body of the track-bar, is located at the upper face thereof, and the inner end of the hinged section is provided ing recess 17 of the body portion of the trackbar when the hinged section is in a horizontal position to relieve the hinge of strain.
The sliding gate, which is supported at its bottom by a horizontally-disposed roller 18, is operated by oppositely-disposed cables 19, extending from opposite sides of the gate and arranged on grooved pulleys 20, and the latter are provided with handles, eccentrically arranged, which are adapted to be rotated to open and close the gate. The grooved pulwith a projection 16, fitting in a correspondleys 20 are arranged vertically 011 posts 21, the upper leaves 22 of the cables pass around pulleys 23 and extend rearward therefrom to the back of the gate to which they are secured, and the lower leaves 24: pass around pulleys 25 of the upright 6 and extend forward therefrom and are secured to the front of the gate. By this arrangement of the cables, or other suitable connections, the gate may be readily opened and closed by rotating the grooved pulleys 20.
It will be seen that the gate is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is easilyoperated, and that when open a passage-way may be readily provided for hay or other high loads.
hat I claim is- 1. The combination of asupporting-frame, a horizontal track-bar provided with a hinged section arranged over the gateway, a sliding gate suspended from the track-bar, means for swinging the hinged section of the trackbar upward, and a resilient supporting-arm mounted on a supporting-frame and arranged to receive the hinged section of the track-bar when the same is swung upward, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a horizontal trackbar provided with a hinged section adapted to be swung upward and arranged over the gateway, posts supporting the track-bar, one of the posts having its upper end beveled and provided With a bracket receiving the outer portion of thehinged section-bar, an upright supporting the track-bar at a point intermediate of its ends, a sliding gate suspended from the track-bar, and a horizontally-disposed resilient supporting-arm mounted on the upright and provided with an L-shaped portion arranged to receive the hinged section of the track-bar when the same is swung upward, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a supporting-frame comprising posts 4 and 5, an upright located between the posts and extending above the same, and a horizontal track-bar composed of a stationary body portion connecting the upright and the post 5 and provided at its inner end with a recess and an upwardlyswinging section resting upon and supported by the post i and provided at its inner end with a projection fitting Within the said recess to support the joint, a hinge arranged on the upper edge of the track-bar and connecting the sections, a rail composed of two sections secured to the sections of the track-bar, a sliding gate arranged beneath and suspended from the rail, and means for swinging the hinged section of the track-bar from a horizontal to a vertical position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
