SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,804, dated January 26, 1897.

To add whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS A. EVANS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Carriages, of which the followingis a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to baby-carriages; and the object thereof is to provide a vehicle of this class which may be used as a rocker when desired and as an ordinary baby-can riage whenever necessary.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved baby-carriage; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view of the support for the bed or body thereof, and Fig. 3 an end section.

In the drawings forming part of this specication the separate parts of my improvement are indicated by the same numerals of reference wherever found throughout the several views, and in Fig. 1 of said. drawings I have shown a baby-carriage truck or frame consisting of the usual axles 5, the usual wheels 6, which are mounted on the ends thereof, and but two of which are shown, and atruck-frame 7, at one end of which is the usual handle 8.

The truck-frame 7 is provided at each end with outwardly, upwardly, and inwardly curved springs 9, and mounted on these springs is a plate or board 10.

The plate or board 10 is provided adjacent to each end with transverse slots 11, each of which is adapted to receive a transverse strip 12, each of which is provided on its outer edge with a flange 13, which overlaps the plate or board 10 adjacent to the slot 11, and the bottom 14 of the bed or body 15 of the carriage is provided with rockers 16, which are secured thereto in any desired manner, and to the inner sides of which are secured pins 17, with which are connected spiral springs 18, to the lower ends of which the strips 12 are secured by means of pins 19.

The plates 12 are pivotally connected with the springs 18, and I also secure to the plate or board 10 at each side of the slots or openings 11 keepers 20,which are arranged in pairs at or near each end of said slots or openings, and in connection therewith I provide a yokeshaped lock 21, the sides of which are adapted to pass through said keepers and the crosshead of which is provided with a handle 22.

In practice when it is desired to use the bed or body 15 of the carriage as a rocker it is raised into the position shown in Fig. 1 and the strips 12 swung beneath the rockers 16, as shown in said figure, and the sides of the locking-yokes 21 are passed through the keepers 20, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and securely hold the strips 11 in the position shown in said figures, and in this position the rockers 16 are free to move on said strips, as will be readily understood, and are held in proper position relative thereto by the springs 18.

vThen it is desired to use the device as an ordinary baby carriage and to provide a stationary support for the bed or body 15, the locking-yokes 21 are withdrawn, the rockers 16 drop through the slots or openings 11, and the strips 12 are suspended from the springs 18, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3.

Formed at the sides of the slots or openings 11 are semicircular notches or recesses 23, through which the springs 18 pass in the operation of the device, as herein described, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination in a baby-carriage or similar vehicle,of a supporting plate or board, provided with transverse slots or openings, and supported by springs connected with the frame of the vehicle, a bed or body for the vehicle mounted above said supporting plate or board, and provided with rockers, springs connected with said rockers, and provided with transverse strips which are pivotally connected therewith, and adapted to be supported in said slots or openings, and on which the rockers are adapted to rest, and means for holding said strips in said slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination in a baby-carriage or similar vehicle, of a supporting plate or board, provided with transverse slots or openings, and supported by springs connected with the frame of the vehicle, a bed or body for the vehicle mounted above said supporting plate or board, and provided with rockers, springs connected with said rockers, and provided with transverse strips which are pivotally connected therewith, and adapted to be supported in said slots or openings, and on which the rockers are adapted to rest, and means for holding said strips in said slots or openings, consisting of locking-yokes, which are passed through keepers connected with the bottom of the supporting plate or board, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination with the frame of a baby-carriage, or similar vehicle, of asuitable support connected therewith by means of springs, said support being provided with transverse slots or openings, a bed or body adapted to be supported thereover, and provided with rockers, which are adapted to pass through said slots or openings, said rockers being provided with spiral springs which are pivotally connected therewith and to the lower end of whiohare pivotally connected strips which are adapted to be supported in said slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.
