SUBSTITUTE FOR INKING=RIBBONS IN TYPE-WRITER MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,145, dated January 12, 1897.

Be it known that we, LEE S. BURRIDGE and NEWMAN R. MARSHMAN, residents of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Substitutes for Inking-Ribbons in Type-VVriter Machines, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a new and improved substitute for inking-ribbons in type writer machines, and has for its object to pro duce a cheap substitute for such inking-ribbons, and one which can be readily attached to the type-writer with celerity without soiling the fingers to too great an extent.

To this end our invention consists in the new and useful substitute for inking-ribbons hereinafter described and claimed.

Our invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a construction embodying one form of our invention. Fig. 2 is a section thereof on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring now specifically to the drawings, A indicates a disk or other suitable sheet of textile fabric. This fabric is shown as perforated, as at a b c. The edges of these perforations are stiffened by washers a b 0. These perforations are designed to cooperate with propelling means for displacing the disk in the type-writer machine. At or near the periphery of the sheet is a stiffener d, which, in addition to stiffening the edge of the disk or sheet, serves also to hold the textile sheet taut, and may also cooperate with propelling means for displacing or turning the disk, or both.

We have used the sheet in a type-writer by interposing it between the printing agent and impression-surface of the type-writer, but it may be otherwise used. What we now consider to be the best manner of using our invention is shown in a companion application of even date herewith, Serial No. 567 ,608.

WVhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1'. A type-writer inking device consisting of a sheet of textile fabric provided with a stiffener at or near its edge, substantially as described.

2. As a new and useful article of manufacture, the herein-described improvement in type-writer inking devices consisting of a sheet or disk A provided with a peripheral stiffener cl and perforated for cooperation with propelling means.

3. As a new and useful article of manufacture, the herein-described improvement in type-writer inking devices comprising a perforated ink-carrying disk combined with. an annular stiffener secured against a face of the disk at or near the edge thereof.
