Description

(No Model.)
. J. G. GRABTREE.
SHOPPING AX.
iiiil I I! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES G. CRABTREE, OF TEXARKANA, TEXAS.
CHOPPlNG-AX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,716, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed October 8, 1896. Serial No.- 608,Z62. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES G. CRABTREE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chop pin g-Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chopping-axes of that class which are provided with a poll made in two sections adapted to be clamped or secured to the handle and receive a removable bit or hardened section presenting the cutting edge; and the invention consists in the particular construction of such an ax, as hereinafter fully set forth, and
v specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a chopping-ax constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view-on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a per-- spective view with the parts separated.
Referring to the drawings, A and A designate the sections or parts which make up the poll of the ax, and the sections are hinged to each other at the ends that form the butt, preferably by means of lugs a a, which proj ect from one section and fit into corresponding recesses in the other section and receive a pintle carried thereby. This arrangement provides for a swinging movement of the sections upon each other, the inner edge of the pivoted section being rounded, so as not to interfere with such movement.
Near the outer end of one of the sections A A, on the inner side thereof, is formed or rigidly secured a boss a, having a threaded aperture which is continued through the said section, as shown, and the other section is pro vided on its inner side with a recess located and shaped to receive the end of the boss, said section also having an opening which registers with the threaded opening in the boss. By this arrangement when the sections A and A are brought together they are firmly connected by a bolt B, which is let into the apertures engaging the threads thereof, the boss providing a space between said sections in which the removable bit, hereinafter described, may
be firmly clamped.
Each section of the pollis provided at an intermediate point of its inner side with a transverse recess to receive the end of the handle and snugly embrace the same when said sections are connected to each other by the bolt 13, as hereinbefore described, the handle having projecting pins 0, which fit in corresponding apertures in the sections A and A.
D designates the removable bit or hardened cutting-section of the ax, which is provided near its rear end with an opening d of the same configuration as the boss a, over which the bit is placed, said'opening being so positioned that the inner edge of the bit will bear against the adjoining edge of the handle. 4
It will be noted that the portion of the bit D which lies between the sections A and A is of the proper thickness to permit said sections to positively engage the boss and also bear upon said bit.
The bit is provided with transverse shoulders d, which bear against the outer ends of the sections A and A and bring the sides of the bit flush with the sides of the poll.
By the particular construction herein sho wn and described the bit may be readily removed when desired by simply withdrawing the screw 13 and swinging the section A back, as shown in Fig. 3. Conversely, in replacing the bit or inserting another one said bit is placed over the boss to rest upon the section A, after which the section A is swung down upon the handle and bit and the screw B inserted in the threaded aperture and turned to firmly connect the parts to each other.
It will be noted that when the bit is secured in place it contacts with the handle of the ax, with. the outer ends of thesections A and A, and with the side edges of the boss a, thus preventing any possibility of the said bit becoming loose or working when the ax is in use.
The sections A and A may be made of cast metal, while the bit is of hardened steel. It may also be mentioned that the opening in the section A through which the screw passes is countersunk, as shown, to receive the head of said screw, so that the face thereof will be flush with the side of the ax.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a chopping-ax, the combination, of the sections A and A hinged to each other at one end and providing a recess to receive the end of the handle, a boss formed on the inner side of one of said sections, a bit having a recess to receive the boss, and a screw let into a threaded aperture in the several parts, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination in an ax, of the sections A and A hinged to each other at one end and providing a recess to receive the end of the handle, pins projecting from the handle into apertures therefor in said sections, a boss formed on the inner side of one of the sections and provided with a threaded aperture,
a bit or hardened section having a recess to receive said boss, and a screw passed through i one of the sections to engage the threaded aperture of the boss, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
8. The combination in an ax, of the sections A and A hinged to each other at one end and providing a recess to receive the end of the handle, a boss formed on the inner side of one of the sections and provided with a threaded aperture, a bit or hardened section having a recess to receive the boss said recess being positioned to lock the inner end of the bit in contact with the handle, transverse shoulders on the sides of the bit to engage the ends of the sections A and A; together with a screw passed through one of the sections to enga e i the threaded aperture of the boss carried fiy the other section, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES G. CRABTREE.
