WRENCH.
No.574,513 Patented Jan.5-,1897.

JOHN A. BARKER, OF LA CANADA, CALIFORNIA.
' WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 574,513, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed March 30, 1896- Serial No. 585,436. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. BARKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Canada, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches, intended more especially for a pi pewrench, but which will also perform all the functions of the ordinary monkey-wrench; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure I represents a side elevation of my improved wrench, showing it in position to grip a pipe. Fig. II represents aside elevation of the movable jaw and its shank detached. Fig. III is a longitudinal section taken on lines III III, Figs. I and VI. Fig. IV is a rear elevation of the movable jaw detached. Fig. V is a rear view of the entire wrench. Fig. VI is a side elevation showing the position of the movable jaw when a grip has been taken upon a pipe.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main stem of the wrench, which is provided with a threaded portion 2.
3 represents a handle on one end of the stem, and 4 a fixed jaw on the opposite end. The jaw 4 is preferably provided with serrations 5.
6 represents a movable jaw adapted to slide on the stem 1, and having a shank 7, consisting of two members 8, which extend for some distance on each side of the stem 1, said members 8 terminating on the front side of the outer end in the movable jaw 6 and having their rear edges connected by an integral plate 9, which extends over the rear edge of the stem 1, thus forming a guide for the outer end of the shank and for the movable jaw.
10 represents an internal threaded sleeve adapted to travel on the threaded portion 2 of the stem 1. The sleeve 10 is provided near its outer end with an internal annular groove 11, into which lugs 12 on the outer side of the shank members 8 extend, said lugs being inserted in the annular groove before the stem 1 is placed in position, the lugs having convex outer faces, as shown at 12, in order to permit the movable jaw to rock, the stem preventing the inner ends of the members 8 from springing inward, thus holdingthe members in movable contact with the sleeve.
To prevent too great a thrust upon the lugs 12, I provide shoulders 13 on the outer faces of the members 8, which abut against the outer end of the sleeve and sustain a large portion of the thrust when the wrench is being used. The shoulders 13 are provided with curved faces 14 where they abut against the sleeve, so as to permit the rocking movement of the movable jaw. The face of the movable jawis preferablyprovided with serrations 15.
16 represents the outline of a pipe, showing application of the wrench. In operation, when it is desired to use the wrench as a pipe-wrench, the jaws are set as shown in Fig. I, with the jaws resting against opposite sides of the pipe. Then as forward pressure is exerted upon the handle of the wrench the movable jaw 6 rocks backward, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. VI, said move ment forcing a portion of the movable jaw to travel nearer the fixed jaw, with the result that the jaws bite into the pipe and perform the function of rotating or holding the same, as the case may be.
My wrench is also adapted to be used as an ordinary monkey-wrench, the rocking movement of the movable jaw not taking place when the jaws are adjusted to a square nut.
I claim as my invention 1. In a wrench the combination, of a main stem having a screw-threaded portion, a jaw fixed to the stem, a movable jaw loosely connected with the stem at its outer end so as to permit of a rocking movement, an internal screw threaded sleeve mounted upon the stem and having an internal annular groove, shanks on the movable jaw and lugs on the shanks adapted to engage in the groove in the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench the combination, of a main stem, having a screw threaded portion, a threaded sleeve mounted upon the stem, a jaw fixed to the stem, a movable rocking jaw mounted upon the stem, a two-part shank connecting the movable jaw with the sleeve, and having an intervening space between the members of the shank for the reception of the main stem, substantially as set forth.
3. 111 a wrench the combination, of a main stem having a screw threaded portion, a threaded sleeve mounted upon the stem, a jaw fixed to the stem, a movable rocking jaw mounted upon the stem, a two-part shank connecting the movable jaw with the sleeve and a plate connecting the rear portion of the members of the two-part shank with each other, substantially as set forth.
4. In a wrench the combination, of a main stem having a screwthreaded portion, a threaded sleeve mounted upon the stem, a jaw fixed to the stem, a movable rocking jaw mounted upon the stem, a two-part shank connecting the movable jaw with the sleeve and shoulders upon the shank which abut against the end of the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
