PLANlNG-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 574,146, dated December 29, 1896.

To all iuhom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, GEORGE GOOHER, of Lorain, and JAMES D. ScHREooNeosr, of Elyria, in the county of Lorain, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planing-Machines, of which the following is a true and exact description, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to certain improvements on that class of wood-planing machin ery known as jointers or hand-planers, and has for its object to provide a safety device whereby the danger of the operator cutting himself upon the cutter-head is avoided and the guiding of the wood through the machine is facilitated. I

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view ofa portion of a planer embodying our invention. Fig. 2 isa side View of the same.

A is the platen of the machine, and D the cutter-head carrying the knives. K is the guide or fence usually placed along one edge of the platen. This represents the usual construction of these machines, and from it will be seen that the cutter-head extends entirely across the platen, it projecting above the same the proper amount to do the desired cutting.

As the workman passes the board to be planed along the platen it sometimes occurs that his hand comes in contact with the rapidly-revolving cutters and he is severely cut.

We will now describe the manner in which we apply our safety device or guard.

Across the platen and close to the cutterhead we form the groove H, and in it we fit the slide B, so as to slide freely therein, which slide may be clamped at any place by Serial No. 594,663. (No model.)

a suitable clamp G. Carried by this slide is the shield 0, extending across or over the cutter-head, so as to guard the same. This slide B also carries the spring E, secured to it, as by bolts F. The function of this spring is to gently press the piece of wood passing through the machine against the fence K, so that it is only necessary for the operator to hold the piece down and push it along. This spring greatly facilitates the squaring of a piece, as it insures it being held against the fence K, which is not always the case where it must be held over by hand.

The whole guard and spring sliding in slot 7 K may be readily adjusted to any width of piece to be operated upon, and at all times the only portion of the cutter exposed is that necessary to do the cutting, the most dangerous part, that between the edge of the wood andthe operator, being always covered.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to protect byLetters Patent, is-

In a planer of the class described, in combination, a platen having a dovetailed slot across its face, said slot being parallel to the axis of the cutter, a slide movable in the slot and means for clamping it therein, a shield rigidly attached to the slide and extending over the cutter-head, and a horizontally-flexible spring attached to the inner side of the slide, all substantially as described.
